The Japanese two-wheeler giant wants to expand its empire in our country by launching a handful of new motorcycles including multiple twin-cylinder 500 cc bikes, one of which would be manufactured in India with heavy localisation. Reports suggest that Honda may start manufacturing twin-cylinder bikes in our country before KTM.

Honda has planned to launch four new 500 cc motorcycles in India within a year.

As per earlier reports, Honda has planned to launch four new 500 cc motorcycles in India within a year. These bikes would include Honda Rebel 500, Honda CBR500R, Honda CB500F and Honda CB500X. All of them are already on sale in various international markets and powered by a 471 cc parallel-twin, liquid-cooled, DOHC engine. Right now, there’s a big gap between the Honda CB300R and Honda CBR650R in the Japanese brand’s product line-up for the Indian market. The company seeks to fill this void with the 500 cc bikes.

Honda understands our price-sensitive market. It knows that while launching new products is necessary, ensuring that they have low price tags is equally important. Bringing motorcycles via CKD and CBU route attracts huge taxes. That’s why for one of its upcoming 500 cc bikes, Honda would like to manufacture in India with heavy localisation.

Right now, it is unclear as to which 500 cc motorcycle would Honda pick for production in India. Chances are that it could be one of the aforementioned models. Honda would first bring that specific motorbike in India via the CKD route. It would analyse the response it gets in the market and if everything goes fine, it would consider manufacturing it in the country. This model is said to hit the showrooms in 2021. However, the COVID-19 pandemic might have caused some delays.

On the other hand, all the KTM bikes that Bajaj Auto manufactures are single-cylinder motorcycles. In fact, the only twin-cylinder motorcycle in the Austrian brand’s product line-up in India is the KTM 790 Duke, which was brought in as a CKD import and thus had a steep price of INR 8.64 lakh (ex-showroom). Right now, the 790 Duke is not on sale as it hasn’t been updated to the BS6 emission norms yet.

Top 5 upcoming bikes of Honda in 2020-21 https://indianautosblog.com/5-upcoming-honda-motorcycles-launching-this-year-p320111 Tue, 24 Mar 2020 09:31:49 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=320111 The Japanese two-wheeler maker Honda revealed its intention to introduce more premium motorcycles in India in November 2019 at the Milan Motorcycle Show (EICMA). It promised to nearly double its existing premium motorcycle portfolio of 7 products to 13 by March 2021.

Honda will begin first with updates to its existing line-up. Post that, it will be trying to bring in additional new models form its international portfolio.

The intention behind this move is to ultimately foray into mass production of premium motorcycles in India. In fact, the company wants to make India a manufacturing hub for bigger capacity products and export them to other international markets.

There is also an India-made already-existing model on cards. While not much is known about this product, we wouldn’t be surprised if it is the Royal Enfield rivaling middleweight motorcycle.

However, here are the top 5 upcoming bikes of Honda in India in 2020-21.

1. 2020 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade

2020 Honda Cbr1000rr R Fireblade Studio Shots Matt
The India-bound 2020 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade has an Akrapovic exhaust system.

The all-new Honda Fireblade unveiled at EICMA 2019 is nastier than ever. Gone are the days when this litre-class motorcycle could be labelled as the tamest product in the segment. The 999.9 cc inline four-cylinder, liquid-cooled, 16-valve, DOHC motor can dish out 217.5 PS of power and 113 Nm of torque. This powertrain has the same bore and stroke ratio as the RC213V-S's engine but does not get the V4 layout.

Suspension duties are taken care of by 43 mm Showa Big Piston Fork (BPF) at the front and a Showa Balance Free Rear Cushion Light (BFRC-L). The 2020 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade has Nissin-sourced calliper at the front and a Brembo calliper at the rear. Its tyres are the new Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP.

The 2020 Honda CBR1000R-R Fireblade tips the scales at 201.3 kg and has a ground clearance of 118.6 mm. Other cycle parts include a new twin-spar aluminium diamond frame chassis and a new six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) from Bosch. Its features list includes titanium con-rods, forged aluminium piston, three-level Honda Electronic Steering Damper, Wheelie Control and Honda Selectable Torque Control.

We expect the 2020 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade to be priced upwards of INR 20 lakh (ex-showroom).

2. 2020 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP

2020 Honda Cbr1000rr R Fireblade Sp Action Shots R
The 2020 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP has semi-active Ohlins sourced suspension at both ends.

If you thought that the new Fireblade is mental, just wait till you meet the new 2020 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP. It has new fully adjustable Öhlins semi-active NPX Smart EC 2.0 fork up front and Öhlins TTX36 Smart-EC monoshock.

The brakes also received a significant upgrade in the SP variant. They are the latest Brembo Stylema callipers at the front and the same rear Brembo monoblock calliper used on the RC213V-S. Besides, the aerodynamic package in the motorcycle, which includes new winglets that are being termed ‘unbelievable’ by Grand Prix motorcycle racer Marc Marquez himself.

Adding to the versatility of the 2020 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP is a quick-shifter, which is a standard fitment. We expect the 2020 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP to be priced at around INR 25 lakh (ex-showroom).

3. 2020 Honda CB1000R

2020 Honda Cb1000r Graphite Black Right Front Quar
The 2020 Honda CB1000R's engine produces 16% more power and 5% more torque than its outgoing iteration.

The litre-class neo-sports café racer in its 2020 iteration is largely similar to its outgoing iteration and has only a few cosmetic changes. It features an all-black triple clamp and stem that are complemented by a new Metallic Matte Ballistic Black headlight surround. In contrast, the previous model used silver accents for the triple clamp and stem. Besides that, it has a silver racing stripe enhances the visual appeal of the fuel tank. Also, apart from the existing Candy Chromosphere Red and Graphite Black paint scheme, the 2020 Honda CB1000R will also be available in a new Matte Pearl Glare White shade.

The engine has received a few upgrades, and it now produces 16% more peak power and 5% more torque than the previous iteration of the motorcycle. Also, the 2020 Honda CB1000R gets revised gear ratios. Its 998 cc inline four-cylinder, liquid-cooled, 16-valve DOHC motor now produces 145.5 PS of power and 104 Nm of torque. Also, the compression ratio of the motorcycle has gone up by 0.4 to 11.6:1.

Salient features of the 2020 Honda CB1000R include throttle-by-wire, four riding modes (standard, rain, sport, and user), engine brake and Honda Selectable Torque Control. Besides that, the motorcycle is also offered with an optional quick-shifter. Suspension setup includes Showa Separate Function Fork Big Piston (SFF-BP) at the front and a Showa monoshock sy the rear.

We expect the 2020 Honda CB1000R to be priced at around INR 15 lakh (ex-showroom).

4. 2020 Honda CBR650R

2020 Honda Cbr 650r Gunpowder Black Metallic Right
The Honda CBR650R will get a BS-VI compliant engine and gain a new Gunmetal Grey shade this year.

This everyday middleweight motorcycle introduced in India last year will be launched in BS-VI avatar after April 2020. Its engine casing loses the bronze shade and gains an all-black finish. The rim stickers too have been removed. However, the LED headlamp and LCD instrumentation have been carried forward in the 2020 Honda CBR650R.

The suspension system includes upside-down telescopic forks (Showa separate function fork) at the front and a monoshock at the rear. The braking system includes the same dual discs at the front and a single disc unit at the rear.

The 2020 Honda CBR650R is powered by the same 649 cc inline four-cylinder, liquid-cooled, DOHC motor. This engine can produce 88.4 PS of power and 60 Nm of torque. The Indian-spec BS-VI Honda CBR650R will be in a slightly different state of tune as Honda premium motorcycles (CKD products) have so far been introduced with reduced performance.

We expect the 2020 Honda CBR650R to be priced much higher than the old, which used to cost INR 7.70 lakh (ex-showroom), at around INR 8.5 lakh (ex-showroom).

5. 500 cc Middleweight Motorcycle

Honda Rebel 500 grey rear at Thai Motor Expo
A locally manufactured Honda middleweight 500 cc motorcycle with the output possibly in the range of 45-47 PS is on cards.

Honda will also launch a new middleweight bike in India manufactured locally. The motorcycle is expected to have an engine displacement around the 500 cc mark and will be dishing out around 45-47 PS of power. This could be the Rebel 500.

Honda will have to price the new motorcycle competitively in order to make the volumes large enough to be commercially viable. That is something which the Japanese motorcycle maker has so far not been able to do so far. Also, to price it competitively, Honda will have to heavily localise it.

Honda to export middleweight bike from India - Report https://indianautosblog.com/honda-export-middleweight-bike-india-p319988 Mon, 09 Mar 2020 04:00:07 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=319988 Earlier reports have suggested that Honda seems to be interested in revising its line-up for India by adding some new motorcycles. These would be middleweight bikes that would help the brand to have its presence in the segment. Right now, it sells only one middleweight bike here - the CBR650R. There is a plan to launch more economical, 500 cc bikes.

2019 Honda Cb500f Press Images Studio Shots Black
The Honda CB500F is the naked version of the Honda CBR500R. It mounts the same 471 cc parallel-twin, liquid-cooled engine.

As of now, Honda hasn’t disclosed any details regarding which 500 cc motorcycles would it bring to India. But we do have information that these bikes are already on sale in some international markets. So, we are expecting that they would be the Rebel 500, CBR500R, CB500X, and CB500X. They all are based on the same 500cc platform and mount the same 471 cc parallel-twin, liquid-cooled engine.

Another report tells us that apart from launching multiple 500 cc bikes in the country, Honda will also manufacture one of those bikes in India with 100% localisation. This will help the brand to compete aggressively in this segment by having a relatively affordable price tag. Which bike will that be, remains a mystery for now.

Now, there’s a new development which indicates that apart from manufacturing a middleweight bike in India with 100% localisation, Honda is also exploring the possibilities of exporting this product to other countries.

Speaking about the same with our colleagues at Fastbikes India, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India's Senior VP of sales and marketing, Yadvinder Singh Guleria, shared that Honda has its production facilities spread in over 30 countries. For the global market, the company decides which models need to be sourced from which country.

Each country has its own regulation norms. So, there are countries which the company can export to while it can’t in some other countries. For example, Honda would only be able to export, let’s say the middleweight bike from India to markets like the US and Japan post-2023 because of their very strict regulation norms.

Honda to develop middleweight bike in India and manufacture it with 100% localisation - Report https://indianautosblog.com/honda-develop-middleweight-bike-india-manufacture-100-localisation-p319986 Sun, 08 Mar 2020 04:00:01 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=319986 Honda is planning to strengthen its foothold and expand its empire in the Indian market. The Japanese company has just launched its all-new 2020 Africa Twin Adventure Sports in the country. It also plans to bring multiple 500 cc motorcycles to our market.

The Honda CB500X is a road-biased touring motorcycle and it could be one of the middleweight bikes that Honda would bring to India in the future.

A new report suggests that Honda will also develop a middleweight bike in India and and manufacture it with 100% localisation. In an interview with Fastbikes India, Yadvinder Singh Guleria, Senior VP of sales and marketing, Honda (India), revealed that the company has its focus on expanding its Big Wing network in the country. For that, a three-tier approach would be followed.

As per this approach, Honda would bring in premium bikes via the CBU route and continue with the CKD assemblies for some models. It will also have a middleweight motorcycle that it will mass-produce in the country with 100% localisation.

It is still unclear as to which 500 cc motorcycle would Honda pick for production in India. But we do know that it is a model that is already on sale in various international markets. Chances are that it could be one of the following bikes:

  • Honda Rebel 500 - a cruiser
  • Honda CBR500R - a sportbike
  • Honda CB500F - a naked streetfighter
  • Honda CB500X - a road-biased touring motorcycle

The aforementioned motorcycles share a 471 cc parallel-twin, liquid-cooled, DOHC engine. Depending on the bike, the power and torque output of this engine slightly varies but are within the range of 45-47 PS and 44-46 Nm respectively. As for the transmission, it the same, a 6-speed unit.

Honda to launch Rebel 500, CBR500R and 2 more 500 cc bikes in India - Report https://indianautosblog.com/honda-launch-rebel-500-cbr500r-2-more-500-cc-bikes-india-p319975 Fri, 06 Mar 2020 09:44:05 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=319975 Honda recently launched its all-new 2020 Africa Twin Adventure Sports in India. The Japanese company wants to further expand its Indian portfolio with four new 500 cc motorcycles.

Honda Rebel 500 red front three quarter at Thai Motor Expo
The Honda Rebel 500 isn’t a brand-new model. It is already on sale in various international markets.

A new media report says that Honda is planning to launch four new 500 cc bikes in the country within a year. These bikes would include Honda Rebel 500, Honda CBR500R, Honda CB500F, and Honda CB500X. At present, Honda doesn’t have a single 500 cc motorcycle in India. Its most only middleweight offering is the CBR650R.

Honda Rebel 500

The Honda Rebel 500 isn’t a brand-new model. It is already on sale in various international markets. However, when launched here in India, it will be Honda’s first cruiser-type motorcycle in the country. The Rebel 500 has a 471 cc liquid-cooled, parallel-twin engine with DOHC setup. It produces 45.5 PS and 44.6 Nm and has a 6-speed transmission. Some of the Rebel 500’s key features include alloy wheels, blacked-out styling, wide tyres, slipper/assist clutch, etc. It is being anticipated that when launched, the Rebel 500 would attract a price somewhere in the INR 4.5-5.0 lakh* range.

Perhaps, we wouldn’t mind seeing the more affordable Rebel 300 as well at a later stage. What do you guys think?

Honda CBR500R

The CBR500R is a fully-faired sportbike with aggressive styling. A motorcycle like this should be received very well by the Indian audience. It shares the 471 cc parallel-twin engine with the Rebel 500. Some of CBR500R’s key features are stainless steel exhaust, digital instrument cluster, LED headlights, aluminium Y-spoke cast wheels, etc. Honda is expected to price the CBR500R in the INR 5.0-5.5 lakh* range.

Honda CB500F

So we have had a cruiser and a sportbike, and now comes a naked streetfighter. It is kind of a stripped-down version of the CBR500R with some minor design changes like a different headlight, upright riding posture, single-piece handlebar, etc. All the underpinnings are the same. It could be priced below the fully-faired bike.

Honda CB500X

With its CB500X, Honda will try to reach out to people who seek an affordable yet capable tourer. The CB500X would most likely be a road-biased model with touring-friendly features like a long windscreen, upright and relaxed riding posture, comfortable long seat, etc.

The Honda CB500X gets many touring-friendly features like a long windscreen, upright and relaxed riding posture, comfortable long seat, etc.

Initially, Honda would bring in the aforementioned 500 cc motorcycles into the country via the CKD route. It would analyse the response they get in our market and if everything goes fine it would consider manufacturing. Apart from the aforementioned models, Honda would also launch its litre-class, track-oriented CBR1000RR-R Fireblade in India.

Honda Rebel 500-based scrambler under development - Report https://indianautosblog.com/honda-rebel-500-based-scrambler-under-development-report-p318931 Fri, 15 Nov 2019 06:29:29 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=318931 Leaked patent images suggest that Honda is working on a new, middleweight scrambler-style motorcycle that will be based on the company’s existing product, the Rebel 500 cruiser.

Honda Rebel 500 Based Retro Scrambler Patent Image
The leaked patent image of the upcoming Honda Scrambler reveals Rebel 500's frame and parallel-twin engine.

Also Read: BS-VI Honda SP 125 launched in India

As seen in the leaked patents, the primary frame is identical to the Rebel 500, although the sub-frame is noticeably different from the cruiser. Moreover, a closer look at the footpegs and brake lever show an off-road biased setup that aims to provide a better grip. The dotted lines in the leaked patent image are the outline of how the final product may look like, although it will undergo a few changes as the development process goes forward.

Apart from the chassis, the upcoming scrambler will also share its engine with the Rebel 500. However, the exhaust pipe on the scrambler, as seen in the patent image, will be relatively tall-set than the cruiser motorcycle. The 471 cc, liquid-cooled, parallel-twin, 8-valve (4-valves per cylinder), DOHC motor on the Rebel 500 makes 46 hp of peak power at 8,500 rpm and 44.6 Nm of max torque at 6,000 rpm. The twin-cylinder mill is claimed to deliver a healthy low-range torque and sufficient higher-rpm performance, and the tuning should suit the scrambler bike as well. It will be interesting to see if Honda also develops a scrambler-style motorcycle around the Rebel 300.

The patent image also shows budget-friendly hardware. Thus, the shock absorption department comprises conventional telescopic forks at the front and twin-sided springs at the back. Braking setup on the motorcycle in the patent image includes single discs on both wheels. The box-type swingarm on the scrambler motorcycle patent looks different from the unit on the Rebel 500.

The Rebel 500 comes with a LED headlight, and we would not be surprised to see a similar setup on the scrambler bike. We may also see a Rebel 500 sourced instrument console on the middleweight scrambler motorcycle. The ergonomics will be very different from the Rebel 500, and the scrambler bike will pack high-set handlebar for better accessibility while off-roading. We also expect to see wire-spoke wheels on the scrambler, with a 19-inch unit at the front.

The Honda Rebel 500 (pictured) inspired headlight and instrument console could also be part of the upcoming scrambler motorcycle.

The new scrambler from Honda will target the budget-oriented middleweight segment of the market and it will be an ideal product for countries like India. Do note that there are no details about the target markets for this motorcycle yet.

The Indian arm of the Japanese two-wheeler brand is looking for a product that can help the brand grab a chunk of the 350cc and 500cc sub-segments.

The Honda Rebel 500's retro styling would've helped attract Royal Enfield buyers, but matching the price of a Classic or a Thunderbird proved tough for HMSI.

In a recent interview to Moneycontrol, Minoru Kato, President and CEO, HMSI said that the niche segment controlled by Royal Enfield is 'very important' to the company, but it may not have an immediate answer. Kato said,

That is one of the biggest challenges for us. We have been undertaking customer surveys and product development. As of today, I am sorry to say we don’t have anything concrete to say.

The Rebel series could have been a rival to Royal Enfield’s dominance in the 350-500cc segment, but Honda is not interested in pitching the motorcycle range against the thumpers, primarily due to the inability to match the price.

Manufacturers have repeatedly tried to compete with Royal Enfield only to fail. Bajaj Auto launched the Dominar 400 with an aim to grab a share of the 350-500cc segment. However, the flagship Bajaj motorcycle could not achieve even 30% of its sales target. Bajaj is now updating the Dominar 400 and the new motorcycle is expected to arrive in November 2018.

In recent updates, Mahindra Group owned Classic Legends is preparing to challenge Royal Enfield by bringing back the Jawa brand into the Indian market. The engine for the upcoming Jawa motorcycle has already been unveiled while the product would be revealed on November 15, 2018. The motorcycle's new BSVI-compliant engine is a 293 cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, DOHC, fuel injected unit that will deliver 27 bhp of maximum power and 28 Nm of peak torque. The engine is tuned to offer a healthy mid-range and a flat torque curve, with efforts also to give it the signature Jawa exhaust note.

Meanwhile, Royal Enfield is expanding its product portfolio by introducing the new Interceptor INT 650 and Continental GT 650. As reported on October 13, the new 650 Twin will be launched in India on November 14, 2018. The motorcycles would be priced aggressively and are expected to arrive in the INR 2.50-3 lakh (ex-showroom) range, making them the most affordable 650cc twin-cylinder motorcycles in the Indian market.

The 650 Twins will use Royal Enfield’s all-new 648 cc, parallel-twin cylinder, SOHC, oil-cooled, 8-valve engine that delivers 47 bhp of maximum power at 7,100 rpm and 52 Nm of peak torque at 5,200 rpm. The engine is mated to Royal Enfield’s first 6-speed gearbox and benefits from slip-assist clutch as standard.
