Toyota Fortuner to Fortuner Legender Conversion Kits Now Out https://indianautosblog.com/toyota-fortuner-legender-conversion-kits-p323804 Sat, 05 Jun 2021 04:15:20 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=323804 Earlier in January this year, Toyota facelifted the Fortuner in India with a mid-life update, introducing a slew of exterior cosmetic updates, new features on the inside and even some mechanical upgrades. Toyota also introduced a new Legender variant of the Fortuner in India. The Toyota Legender gets a completely different face with its own unique bumpers that look even sportier. It also gets a special blacked-out split grille design and new full-LED headlamps with sequential LED turn indicators.

Toyota Fortuner Legender Body Kit
Legender body kits for the Toyota Fortuner are now available in the aftermarket scene, for both the facelift and pre-facelift models.

Most of the cosmetic updates on the Toyota Fortuner facelift (as well as the Legender variant) are concentrated on the soft panels of the SUV - the front and rear bumpers, the grille and the headlamps - which are easily replaceable parts. Now, the Fortuner has always been a very popular vehicle with aftermarket jobs and modifications. Likewise, body kits for the Legender variant are now available in the aftermarket scene. The best thing about these kits are that it can be put on both the regular Fortuner facelift, as well as the pre-facelift model.

2021 Toyota Fortuner Facelift And Legender
The Fortuner Legender looks way sportier than the standard model, but sadly misses out on a 4x4 drivetrain.

The Toyota Fortuner Legender looks really special, but a drawback of this variant is that it's only available in a diesel 4x2 AT variant. You do not get 4x4 option for the Legender variant, and that's huge miss. The fact that the Legender variant is the most expensive model in the lineup, and still misses out on a 4x4 drivetrain, is particularly bothersome. Hence, if you really like the looks of the Fortuner Legender, but also a 4x4 drivetrain, you will be better off with the regular Fortuner facelift, on which you can put the Legender kit at an aftermarket shop.

Toyota Fortuner Legender White Black Front Quarter
If you really like the looks of the Fortuner Legender, you will be better off with a regular Fortuner 4x4 with the aftermarket Legender body kit.

So what does the Legender body kit bring you? Well, it brings you the front bumper with the Legender grille, the LED fog lamps, and the rear bumper with the rear skirts. The full-LED headlamps are, however, optional. What the Legender kit does not bring you are the stylish alloy wheels that you get with the Fortuner Legender from the factory. However, we are sure that will also be available separately in the aftermarket scene. We, however, do not have any information about the price of this Legender body kit. All the listed parts are easily stick-on parts and will not call for any major modification to the SUV.

Under the hood, the Toyota Fortuner facelift continues with the 2.7-litre petrol engine that produces 166hp and 245Nm of torque. This engine comes mated to a either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The 2.8L diesel engine too has been carried over but with certain changes. It continues to produce 177hp and 420Nm of peak torque when paired with the 6-speed manual gearbox. However, if you opt for the automatic-diesel variant, the 2.8L engine has received a healthy upgrade to now produce 204hp and an impressive 500Nm of torque with the 6-speed torque convertor unit.

What To Expect From Next-Gen Toyota Fortuner - Video https://indianautosblog.com/next-gen-toyota-fortuner-video-p323765 Wed, 02 Jun 2021 03:33:39 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=323765 It was only earlier this year that Toyota updated the Fortuner with a facelift in its current, second-gen avatar for our market. However, it is understood that Toyota has been working on the next-generation Fortuner for some time and as per reports, it could see the light of day in 2022. The Toyota Fortuner is the undeterred king in the large-size 7-seater SUV segment in India, and given its popularity in our market, we expect the new, third-gen Fortuner to make it to India within a few months of its global debut in 2022 itself. Although details are still scarce, here's what we know about the next-generation Toyota Fortuner so far.

2022 Toyota Fortuner - What To Expect?

The next-gen Toyota Fortuner will continue to be underpinned by a ladder-frame chassis as that's one of its core concepts. However, the platform is expected to feature quite a few upgrades, with a majorly revised electronic and electrical (E/E) architecture. The next-gen Fortuner will likely ditch the hydraulic steering setup of the current model and adopt an electric power steering to significantly improve the driving experience. Another major upgrade will be much greater levels of digitization and possibly the introduction of ADAS features as well.

2021 Toyota Fortuner Facelift
The next-gen Toyota Fortuner will continue with a revised ladder-frame chassis and is likely to feature diesel-hybrid powertrains. (image used for representation only).

The current-gen Fortuner is already sold with certain ADAS features such as radar-guided cruise control, pre-collision safety system and lane departure warning in international markets. With the next-gen model, Toyota is expected to bring these features to India as well. We also expect some major upgrade on the powertrain front. With ever tightening emission norms, Toyota is unlikely to meet regulations with pure diesel powertrains. So, some sort of electrification is bound to come in, possibly in form of a hybrid-diesel powertrain. There is, however, no clarity if it will be a strong hybrid system or a mild-hybrid system.

2021 Toyota Fortuner Facelift in India

As for its 2021 update, the Toyota Fortuner facelift came with revised LED projector headlamps and a completely new grille which is larger than before but gets far less chrome as standard than the outgoing model. The biggest change on the 2021 Fortuner is the new bumper that looks sportier with deep set fog lamp housings and large air dams. It also gets new a design for the 18-inch alloy wheels and slimmer LED taillights at the rear. Toyota also introduced a new Legender variant of the Fortuner in India that gets a completely different face with its own unique bumper that looks even sportier along with a blacked-out split grille. New Toyota Fortuner 33% Costlier Than Last-gen Model, 18% Quicker https://indianautosblog.com/2021-toyota-fortuner-vs-old-model-p323679 Sun, 30 May 2021 04:00:03 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=323679 The Toyota Fortuner is the most popular large-size 7-seater SUV of its segment, outselling its rivals each month by a very comfortable margin. It's loved for its superior off-road ability, commanding street presence and of course, the famed Toyota reliability. This is something that has remained true for the Toyota Fortuner across generations. The first generation of the Fortuner was introduced in India in 2009 and it was on sale till 2016, after which the second and current-gen model came in. Here's an interesting look at how the Toyota Fortuner 2021 has evolved from its previous generation, with the focus here being on specs and price.

2015 Toyota Fortuner three quarter front
This is the facelift of the first-generation Toyota Fortuner that was introduced in 2012 and was on sale till 2016.

Currently, the Toyota Fortuner 2021 is powered by a 2.8L four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that comes mated to either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. When paired with the automatic gearbox, the engine produces 201hp and 500Nm of peak torque. It has an ARAI-rated mileage of 15.04 kmpl and can sprint from 0-100 kph in about 9.88 seconds in real world conditions. In comparison, the first-gen 2015 Toyota Fortuner was powered by a larger 3.0L four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, mated to either 5-speed manual or automatic gearboxes. However, the older engine produced much lesser power and torque outputs at 169hp and 360Nm respectively.

Engine 2.8L four-cylinder tubo-diesel
3.0L four-cylinder tubo-diesel
Power 201hp 169hp
Torque 500Nm 360Nm
Mileage 15.04 kmpl 12.55 kmpl
0-100 kph time 9.88 seconds sub-12 seconds
Price INR 37.79 lakh (ex-showroom)
INR 28.35 lakh (ex-showroom)

Interestingly, the Fortuner from six years ago wasn't remarkably slower than the current one, as it managed a 0-100 kph sprint time of just under 12 seconds in most real-world tests. Given the fact that it was much less powerful and torque-ey than the current model, its performance was pretty commendable indeed. Essentially, in six years time and after a generation change, the Toyota Fortuner 2021 has become about 2 seconds faster. What has improved a little more significantly is its fuel efficiency. Compared to the 15.04 kmpl of the current model, the Toyota Fortuner from 2015 had an ARAI-rated mileage of 12.55 kmpl.

Toyota Fortuner 2021 Facelift And Legender
Earlier this year, Toyota updated the second-gen Fortuner in India with a mid-life facelift.

In essence, the new Toyota Fortuner 2021 is about 18% quicker than the previous-gen model and about 20% more fuel-efficient as well. While these are notable improvements, what has seen a much steeper rise is its price. Towards the end of its lifecycle, the first-gen Toyota Fortuner diesel AT 4x4 costed INR 28.35 lakh (ex-showroom). In comparison, the 2021 Fortuner costs INR 37.79 lakh (ex-showroom) for the diesel 4x4 AT variant, marking a 33% increase in its price. While part of that rise in price is definitely due to inflation over time, it has to be admitted that cars and SUVs have become a lot more expensive than they were even a few years ago.

On the upside, modern cars and SUVs are also equipped with a lot more features and tech, which obviously come at a cost. The Toyota Fortuner 2021 is loaded with features such as LED headlamps and tail lamps, an 8.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, 8-way power-adjustable and ventilated driver and co-driver's seats, LED ambient lighting, an 11-speaker JBL audio system, a 360-degree camera and much more, most of which were unimaginable on the Fortuner six years ago. So that's the cost of development and progress we have come to expect from newer cars and SUVs on our roads these days. While they usually come at much steeper prices, they offer that much more value as well. After the facelift, the next-gen Toyota Fortuner is expected to arrive next year.

First-Ever All-Black Toyota Fortuner Facelift - This is IT! https://indianautosblog.com/all-black-toyota-fortuner-facelift-p323673 Tue, 25 May 2021 06:37:40 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=323673 Earlier in January this year, Toyota facelifted the Fortuner in India with a mid-life update, introducing a slew of exterior cosmetic updates, new features on the inside and even some mechanical upgrades. The Toyota Fortuner has always been a very popular vehicle with aftermarket jobs and modifications. Likewise, examples of modified versions of the facelifted SUV have now started surfacing on social media platforms like Instagram. Here we have a subtly modified Toyota Fortuner facelift sporting an all-black theme that's really accentuating its appeal.

Toyota Fortuner Facelift All Black Modified Front
Here's a modified Toyota Fortuner facelift that simply looks sinister in this all-black avatar.

This Toyota Fortuner facelift has been stripped off all its chrome and silver garnishes. Starting from the front, the chrome-finished radiator grille now features a blacked-out theme, and a similar suite is followed for the scuff plate on the front bumper. Over to the sides, the biggest update are obviously to the wheels. Although they remain similar in design as the standard model, the silver finish has been ditched in favour of a gloss black finish. It can also be seen wearing larger, BFGoodrich all-terrain tyres that make it look even more purposeful. At the back, the chrome garnish on the tail gate has been blacked-out as well.

The only chrome element on this SUV adding some contrast are the door handles and the chrome trim along the window line that wrap-around the rear as well. It gives a much-needed break to the bulk of the all-black paint scheme. These subtle modifications are a perfect example of how just a unique paint scheme and larger tyres can vastly alter the look of an SUV. As for its 2021 update, the  Toyota Fortuner facelift came with revised LED projector headlamps and a completely new grille which is larger than before but gets far less chrome as standard than the outgoing model.

The other most significant upgrade on this Fortuner is obviously the heavy duty metal bumper at the front. The bulky, blacked-out bumper features an integrated bull bar, an electric winch, LED light modules at either ends and a bash plate down below. The shape of bumper also help improve the approach angle of the SUV, something that will be of great use off-road. The rear bumper too has been updated with tow hooks for some heavy duty pulling. Toyota Fortuner Much Quicker Than Ford Endeavour in 0-100 kmph Test https://indianautosblog.com/ford-endeavor-vs-toyota-fortuner-acceleration-test-p323581 Tue, 18 May 2021 09:00:24 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=323581 The Ford Endeavour and the Toyota Fortuner have been at loggerheads with each other for the longest time in the Indian market. It is one of the most iconic rivalries among mass-market cars in India and admittedly, both SUVs have a huge loyal fan base. So here we have yet another story on the Ford Endeavor vs Toyota Fortuner, this time testing them for their acceleration. This video has been uploaded by Gaadiwaadi on their Youtube channel, testing both the SUVs to see which is quicker to 100 kph and beyond.

But before we get into how they performed, let's first talk about the specifications of both SUVs. The Ford Endeavour is powered by a 2.0L four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that has been tuned to produce 170hp of power and 420Nm of peak torque. This engine solely comes mated to a 10-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Although gearbox options are very limited in the Endeavour, it must be said that the 10-speed unit is one of the best in its class. It also comes with a full-time four-wheel-drive system.

The Ford Endeavor is solely offered with a 2.0L diesel engine and a 10-speed automatic gearbox in India.

As for the Toyota Fortuner, it gets two engine options under its hood. There's a 2.8L four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that produces 201hp of power. It gets two transmission options - a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic. When mated to the manual transmission, the engine produces 420Nm of peak torque. Interestingly, when mated to the automatic transmission, it produces 500Nm of peak torque. The Fortuner is also offered with a 2.7L four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 165hp and 245Nm of peak torque. This engine comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Speed Ford Endeavour 4x4 AT
Toyota Fortuner 4x4 AT
0 - 60 kph 5.64 seconds 4.57 seconds
0 - 80 kph 8.76 seconds 6.98 seconds
0 - 100 kph 13.6 seconds 9.88 seconds
0 - 120 kph 20.64 seconds 13.09 seconds
0 - 140 kph NA 17.68 seconds

Here in this test, both SUVs are in their top-spec diesel-automatic guise. As you can see from the table above, the Toyota Fortuner is much faster than the Ford Endeavour at each level of the acceleration test. The Fortuner came into this fight with an advantage on paper and that has clearly reflected in its real-world performance as well. The Fortuner is faster than the Endeavour to 60kph, to 80kph, to 100kph and even to 120kph. In fact, the gap keeps on increasing as the speeds get higher. By the 100kph mark, the Fortuner is nearly 4 seconds faster than the Endeavour.

Toyota Fortuner Front Three Quarters
The Toyota Fortuner is clearly much faster than the Endeavour, largely helped by its advantage on paper.

The Toyota Fortuner even managed a sub-10 second sprint to 100kph, which is really commendable for such a big, seven-seater SUV. By the 120kph mark, the Fortuner has increased its lead to nearly 7 seconds.  So far, the performance has been pretty effortless for the Fortuner, going on to hit 140kph in 17.68 seconds. Meanwhile, the Ford Endeavour was so much slower, that it could not hit the 140kph mark as the driver ran out of road, although the same stretch of road was used for both SUVs. What's even more interesting to note is that the Fortuner is faster to 140kph than the Endeavour is to 120kph. So, if you were to pick either of these SUVs based on their performance, you now know which one to go for.

Watch All-black Toyota Fortuner Yump to Glory - VIDEO https://indianautosblog.com/toyota-fortuner-offroad-jump-video-p323418 Thu, 06 May 2021 14:30:42 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=323418 The Toyota Fortuner remains one of the most widely modified SUVs in our country and while we have come across many crazy, over-the-top modifications for the Fortuner, the example we here is quite subtle and yet, tastefully done up. This Toyota Fortuner dons an all-black paint scheme on the outside, a colour that really suits the character of the SUV. In stock condition, the Fortuner comes with generous dozes of chrome. However, much of the chrome has been eliminated from this modified Fortuner and that really compliments the all-black look.

The biggest update on this Fortuner is obviously its grille. The multi-slatted chrome grille has been swapped with an all-black TRD-spec mesh grille. The new grille makes the Fortuner look much sharper and sleeker. Interestingly, the fog lamp surrounds continues to be the stock chrome trim and haven't been blacked out. Over to the sides, the all-black theme continues with the blacked-out alloy rims but is well contrasted with chrome trims for the door handles and window line. This Fortuner also comes wearing an LED bar light on its roof.

The Toyota Fortuner's superior off-road prowess helps it soak up the impact from that yump without any drama.

The Toyota Fortuner is obviously known for its supreme off-road capability and that's evident from how the suspension beautifully absorbs the impact of that yump. Do note, that this a pre-facelift version of the Fortuner, the same that was on sale in India till the end of 2020.

Top 10 SUVs in India With Best Road Presence - Fortuner, Harrier and More https://indianautosblog.com/top-10-suvs-in-india-with-best-road-presence-p323242 Sun, 25 Apr 2021 11:00:32 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=323242 Indians have a special affinity towards SUVs and that can be seen given the rising number of products launched in this segment and also the sheer volume they are enjoying. While practicality is one aspect of owning a SUV, most people are actually looking for the road-presence these cars offer, which not only elevates the whole ownership experience but also elevates the status-symbol, one which SUVs are famous for providing. Hence we list down top 10 SUVs you can buy in India with the best road-presence.

Toyota Fortuner

2021 Toyota Fortuner Facelift And Legender
For 2021, Toyota launched the Fortuner with a new facelift and a new Legender variant.

For its 2021 update, Toyota has graced the new Fortuner with a handful of design tweaks making it more appealing in the full-size SUV segment. The 2021 model comes with a new grille, larger ‘inlets’ behind the fog lights, new DRLs on its chin and a wider scuff plate. Meanwhile, there's a new Legender that gets its own unique styling. Shaper and more rakish looking, the narrow ‘grille’ and deep air dam make it look seriously appealing. And the Legender also gets a two-tone paint job.

Ford Endeavour

Update after update, the Ford Endeavour has changed very little.

Update after update, the Ford Endeavour has changed very little. The SUV received a mild facelift a couple of years back. Hence, its switch to BS6 does not see any cosmetic changes. With a keen sight, you can spot that the headlamps now get square projector units instead of the round unit from the previous version. That’s because they now hold LED elements! The proud engine badge on the side fender which had the letters ‘3.2’ embossed in bold now just states the name of the SUV. Other than that, everything else is the same.

Isuzu D-Max V-Cross

2018 Isuzu D-Max V-Cross (facelift) front three quarters left side
In India, we will continue with the last-gen Isuzu D-Max V-Cross even with its BS6 update.

While we are still waiting on the 2021 model, the 2019 model facelift is currently on sale with a new front-end design that looked a lot more aggressive than fit the overall persona of the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross a lot better. This new look can be credited to several new elements like the new bumper which is beefier than before and is now complemented by sharper-looking fog lamp housings which get a dash of chrome. The lights also have new L-shaped LED Daytime Running lights which add to the aggressive look even more. Laterally, the car continues with its butch appeal with its 18-inch alloy wheels and a side step-board that sits more flush than before and there’s a new shark-fin antenna that’s included in the package too.

Citroen C5 Aircross

Citroen C5 Aircross Front Quarter Right
Citroen's first product in India is coming via the CKD route and is being locally assembled at Citroen's plant in Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu.

Citroen’s entry into the Indian SUV segment with the C5 Aircross was a wise choice. In terms of design, the car is dressed to the teeth with elements that stand out in the sea of SUVs in India. For instance, there is no logo stuck or screwed onto the front grille or bonnet; the front grille itself turns into the brand logo. The side body cladding goes notably higher up on the door than we’ve seen on most SUVs as well. In addition to this, it also gets oval accents to make the style stand out more. Even the C-shaped chrome garnish on the window line is a very cool touch, complemented by 18-inch alloys that’d look right at home on a concept car.

Tata Harrier

The Harrier SUV was the first vehicle to feature Tata’s IMPACT Design 2.0 philosophy.

The Harrier SUV was the first vehicle to feature Tata’s IMPACT Design 2.0 philosophy. At the front, the car gets a dual-tone bumper with a satin silver chin guard, xenon HID projector headlamps and dual function LED DRLs with turn indicators. The SUV gets flared wheel arches that house 5-spoke alloy wheels. It has a high shoulder line and blacked-out B pillars, while the C-pillar houses a triangular quarter glass. At the rear, the Harrier has a raked windshield, a spoiler and 3D LED taillamps with a sporty piano black finisher. The dual-tone rear bumper gets silver inserts.

MG Hector

The 2021 facelift brings in a set of larger, 18-inch wheels which better suit the stance of the Hector.

The MG Hector pretty much outsizes everything in its class. It comes as the lengthiest SUV with the largest wheelbase amongst its rivals, though the narrow girth and excessive rear overhang do throw proportions off a bit. The 2021 facelift brings in a set of larger, 18-inch wheels which better suit the stance of the Hector. A generous use of chrome means the Hector is big on bling and elements like the split LED DRLs and headlamps set up ensure the MG grabs attention.

Mahindra Thar

2020 Mahindra Thar Front 3 Quarters
The Mahindra Thar now strikes a perfect balance between off-road ability and practicality.

It’s difficult to strike a balance between pleasing the aficionados and making your product a mass-market one. But somehow Mahindra managed to nail it with the new Thar. Every panel is now chunkier, the new 18-inch wheels have been very smartly designed, and the car itself has grown in terms of length (+65mm), width (129mm) and wheelbase (+20mm). But despite all the modern elements, it retains various old-school elements. Even the front grille adds some retro and draws inspiration from the old Mahindra Armada Grand. The base AX variant features a fixed soft top as standard, while the top-end LX can be had with either a fixed hardtop or a convertible soft top. The latter two can be fitted to the base variant as options.

Hyundai Creta

2020 Hyundai Creta Images Front Profile Blue 1
Although striking to look at, the new Hyundai Creta still divides opinion on its styling.

The 2020 Hyundai Creta comes with a brand new design on the outside that falls in line with the same language that began with the Venue. Upfront, there is a massive hexagonal grille that is outlined by a chrome strip that looks a tad too shiny. Then you have the ice cube three-element LED headlamps that look stylish with the LED DRLs sitting on top of them. The boot gets a bulge that makes the rear section look muscular and the black stripe that connects the tail lamps help the Creta look unique. On the sides, the flared wheel arches add some muscle and the sloping roofline makes it look stylish. The alloy wheel design on the diesel car is the usual Hyundai affair - sharply cut and sporty.

Kia Sonet

Kia Sonet Images Front Three Quarters Action 2
Kia will soon roll out an update on the Sonet with new logo and features.

Kia has done a skillful job in burying the same platform that it shares with the Hyundai Venue. It dresses to impress with a large bonnet and stubby rear end. The overhangs on the Sonet are larger than that of the Venue. In the top-rung variants, one is treated to full-LED headlamps with integrated daytime running lamps that double as turn indicators. Elements such as the wide grille (with a sweet knurled chrome outline) and the creases on the hood paired with the flared wheel arches give the Sonet much needed visual muscle. There are some intricate details you’d appreciate, like the chrome surround for the projector fog lamps and the layered pattern on the grille that Kia says is inspired by the stepwells of ancient India.

MG Gloster

Mg Gloster Front 3 Quarters Right
The MG Gloster has a very commanding street presence, thanks to its huge size.

The Gloster is built on MG’s ladder-frame chassis and measures 5,005mm in length, 1,932mm in width and 1,875mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,950mm. The car was at display during last year’s Auto Expo and a few design cues included an octagonal grille with chrome slats, LED headlamps with DRLs, fog lamps with round chrome bezel and a sculpted bumper and hood. Also on offer are a set of dual-tone alloy wheels, bold shoulder creases, chrome around the window line, chrome door handles, LED tail-lights and roof rails.

Ford Endeavour vs Toyota Fortuner vs MG Gloster - Braking Test https://indianautosblog.com/ford-endeavour-vs-toyota-fortuner-vs-mg-gloster-braking-test-p323260 Fri, 23 Apr 2021 10:30:27 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=323260 The competition in the large-size SUV segment is quite fierce. It consists of cars like Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, and MG Gloster. While the Toyota Fortuner is the undisputable king of this segment, the MG Glostal is the newest entrant, as it was launched in the Indian market a few months back. All of these SUVs come with powerful engines to lug these heavy-weights around. But how good are their brakes? Here’s a recent brake test video from the YouTube channel of GaadiWaadi, where the test is conducted between all three SUVs. This video shows which SUV among the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and the MG Gloster offer the best braking performance.

All three SUVs are offered with four disc brakes along with ABS and EBD. But, the body weight and tyre sizes of these SUVs are quite different. Watch the video embedded below to know which of these three SUVs take the least distance to do 100kmph to 0 kmph.

The Vlogger starts the video by testing the braking capabilities of MG Gloster. He drives the car to 100kmph, and after reaching a pre-decided spot, he applies the brakes. Afterwards, he puts a cone to the point where the SUV came to halt. Then the Youtuber drove the Ford Endeavour and repeated the same process. The Ford SUVs stopped much ahead in comparison to the Gloster. In the end, he tested the braking capabilities of the new Toyota Fortuner and surprisingly, it was slightly ahead of the spot, where Ford Endeavour stopped. This simply shows that Ford Endeavour is the most capable large SUV in terms of hard braking.

All three SUVs compete in the large SUV segment

In the Indian market, the Ford SUV is powered by a 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine, which develops 168 Bhp of peak power and 420 Nm of twisting force. The engine comes paired to a 10-speed AT. The Toyota Fortuner derives power from a 2.8-litre diesel and 2.7-litre petrol engine. The MG SUV gets propelled by a 2.0-litre diesel mill, which is offered in two states of tunes. The less powerful version of the car develops power and torque output of 163 Bhp and 375 Nm, respectively, whereas the twin-turbo iteration puts out 218 bhp and 480 Nm. Transmission duties are done by an 8-speed AT.

Although most SUVs in this category -  Ford Endeavor, MG Gloster, etc, - have a proper 4x4 system, few can match up to the ruggedness and the off-road prowess of the Toyota Fortuner. You will come across many videos on the internet where several SUVs have failed to ace an off-road challenge, but when its the turn of the Toyota Fortuner, it just smashes it without much drama at all.

Here we have a similar video where we can see a Toyota Fortuner ploughing through deep snow in Russia without any fuss at all. This Fortuner is not even wearing snow chains on its wheels and it still finds traction to push through deep snow and keep on going. And that's simply because the Fortuner has a very robust and capable 4x4 system. Combined with Toyota's legendary reliability, the Fortuner is an SUV that will really take you anywhere.

Do note, that this a pre-facelift version of the Fortuner, the same that was on sale in India till the end of 2020. Under the hood, the pre-facelift version of the Fortuner came powered by a 2.8-litre diesel mill that produced 177hp and 420Nm of torque. Toyota recently updated the Fortuner with a facelift here in India. The 2021 Toyota Fortuner facelift comes with revised LED projector headlamps and completely new grille which is larger than before but gets far less chrome than the outgoing model. It also sports a new mesh-pattern.

2021 Toyota Fortuner Facelift And Legender
Toyota recently updated the Fortuner with a facelift here in India.

The biggest change is the new bumper which looks way more sporty with deep set fog lamp housings and large air dams. It also gets new 18-inch alloy wheels and slimmer LED tail lights at the rear. Toyota also introduced a new Legender variant of the Fortuner in India that gets a completely different face with its own unique bumper that looks even sportier along with a blacked-out split grille. New-gen Tata Safari vs Pre-Facelift Toyota Fortuner In A Drag Race https://indianautosblog.com/tata-safari-vs-toyota-fortuner-drag-race-p322840 Sun, 14 Mar 2021 05:15:41 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=322840 Recently, Tata Motors launched the new-gen Safari in India, marking the return of an iconic nameplate.  Soon after its launch in our market, the waiting period on the SUV is already up to around 2.5 months in some cities, which simply shows the high-demand for Tata's new flagship. The 2021 Tata Safari  looks butch and has quite some presence on the road. In fact, it looks almost as big as the Toyota Fortuner. But does it have a grunt as powerful as the Toyota SUV?

Well, to answer that question, here's a drag race between the Toyota Fortuner diesel automatic and the Tata Safari diesel manual. This video has been uploaded by a YouTube channel named Arun Pawar. The video shows a 2018 Toyota Fortuner diesel automatic competing against the new-gen Tata Safari diesel manual. This drag race may not be completely fair as one SUV has a manual gearbox while the other has an automatic. However, the vlogger conducted four different rounds and also changed the drivers for a more accurate result.

But first, the specifications. Mechanically, this pre-facelift Toyota Fortuner is powered by a 2.8-litre diesel mill that produces 177hp and 420Nm of torque. However, here we need to consider the heavier kerb weight of Fortuner than the Tata Safari. The Tata SUV is powered by a 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine, which is capable of shredding out power and torque outputs of 170hp and 350 Nm. Both SUVs are quite equally matched on power. Although the Fortuner has more torque, it is also around 700kg heavier than the Tata Safari.

Tata Safari Adventure Persona Side Profile
The 2021 Tata Safari has the dimensions of a large size SUV. In fact, it looks almost as big as the Fortuner.

Talking about the drag race, in the first round, both SUVs started the race almost head to head, but the Safari takes a small lead. The Toyota Fortuner eventually starts to creep ahead of Safari, but then the Fortuner driver applies the brakes. Afterwards, the Toyota SUV wins the second, third and fourth rounds. For the third and fourth round, the drivers were swapped. In the third and fourth round, the Toyota Fortuner effortlessly takes the lead and remained ahead of Safari till the finish line.

 Toyota Fortuner 1
It is, however, the Toyota Fortuner that wins all the drag races effortlessly.

The Toyota Fortuner wins this drag race quite effortlessly. While the Fortuner featured in this video is the pre-facelift version, the 2021 Toyota Fortuner comes with an upgraded diesel engine that produces 201hp of power and 500Nm of torque in its automatic guise. The new Fortuner would have outpaced the Safari by an even bigger margin. That said, we think the new Safari is all the SUV you will ever need. Click here to find out more.

Modified Toyota Fortuner Facelift Portrays Black & White Filter with Perfection https://indianautosblog.com/modified-toyota-fortuner-facelift-black-white-filter-p322817 Wed, 10 Mar 2021 06:30:22 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=322817 Toyota Fortuner has recently received a mid-life refresh, which lends it with a slew of cosmetic and mechanical updates along with powerful powertrain options. The Fortuner facelift was launched in the country in January this year. But pictures of modified examples have started to float across the internet already. We too came across a set of images of a modified Toyota Fortuner facelift via social media platform, which has been tuned by a Coimbatore-based modifier – KitUp Automotive. Although the modifications are subtle, they are noticeable and help this Fortuner with an accentuated appeal.

Modified Toyota Fortuner Facelift Top 3 Quarters
This Toyota Fortuner gets a perfect black and white combination to look alluring.

Talking of the modifications, the tuner has thoroughly dechromed this Toyota Fortuner facelift by finishing the chrome bits in a piano-black theme. Starting from the front, the chrome-finished radiator grille now features a black theme, and a similar suite is followed for the scuff plate. Around the sides, the silver alloys wheels now wear a black paint scheme. To ensure the black and white theme is continued, the door handles, ORVM caps and the top half of the SUV features a blacked-out treatment. At the rear end, Toyota logo, tails lamps, and chrome applique are now painted in black.

Modified Toyota Fortuner Facelift Top 3 Quarters 1
Around the rear, this Fortuner facelift now gets a KitUp Automotive's logo, which looks quite cool.

Interestingly, this blacked-out treatment gels well with the white paint scheme of the SUV. Indeed, the black trim pieces add some contrast to the Fortuner’s white exterior. However, we are not aware of the modifications, if any have been performed on the inside. Interestingly, the Fortuner facelift comes loaded to the gills. Its long feature list comprises of an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay compatibility, connected car tech, 8-way power-adjustable front seats, 11-speaker JBL sound system, powered tailgate, ventilated front seats and more.

Modified Toyota Fortuner Facelift Side View
Surprisingly, the blacked-out wheels suite quite well with the white paint scheme of the Toyota Fortuner facelift.

Toyota is offering the Fortuner Facelift with two engine options – 2.7L petrol and 2.8L diesel. The 2.7L naturally-aspirated petrol unit is a 4-cylinder unit, which pushes out 166 Hp and 245 Nm, while the 2.8L turbocharged diesel engine is capable of pushing out 204 Hp against 500 Nm of max output. Transmission options on the petrol motor include a 5-speed MT and a 6-speed AT. However, the oil burner can be had paired to either a 6-speed MT or a 6-speed AT. Prices for the Toyota Fortuner start at INR 29.98 lakh for the base-spec trim and go up to Rs. 37.58 lakh for the Legender trim. With these prices, it rivals the Ford Endeavour and MG Gloster in the Indian market.

Can New Tata Safari Attract Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour Buyers? https://indianautosblog.com/2021-tata-safari-vs-toyota-fortuner-p322673 Mon, 01 Mar 2021 02:45:49 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=322673 What are the things that typical Indian SUV buyers look for in a vehicle? Let's say, a commanding street presence, some rugged appeal, a potent engine, good mile-munching abilities, good ride quality and lots of space and practicality, right? The new Tata Safari has all this in plenty and then some more. But apart from the SUV itself, one of the other big highlights is its pricing. With introductory prices ranging between INR 14.69 - 21.45 lakh (ex-showroom), it seems to be an extremely good value for money for a proper 3-row SUV. I think the 2021 Tata Safari is truly all the SUV most of you'll ever need. Allow me to elaborate.

With the coming of the 2021 Tata Safari, the full-size SUV segment of the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavor could potentially be at a threat. If we were to take the Toyota Fortuner as the benchmark of the segment - which it is, at least in terms of sales - the new Safari isn't much smaller than the former in terms of dimensions. The new Safari measures 4,661 mm in length and 1,894 in width. Meanwhile, the Fortuner measures 4,795mm in length and 1,855 mm in width. While the Fortuner is longer than the Safari, the latter is actually wider. Even their wheelbase differs by just 4mm, the Fortuner's being longer.

2021 Tata Safari Adventure Persona Side Profile
The 2021 Tata Safari Adventure Persona has a very daunting street presence that better than even some full-size SUVs.

The 2021 Tata Safari even rides on large 18-inch wheels, just like the bigger SUVs. Opt for the top-spec Safari Adventure Persona and you benefit from a great street presence. So, in terms of a commanding street presence, the new Safari has that in plenty - a huge matter of consideration for an Indian SUV buyer. The next most important thing for a 3-row SUV is the space in the third row. The Safari fares quite decently in terms of space in its third row. You can squeeze two adults in the third row with just about enough room for short journeys.

Okay, it's sure not as spacious as some of the full-size SUVs but it is definitely not far behind. Features like AC vents for the third row and USB charging ports make it all the more livable. As for engine specifications and performance, the new Tata Safari is powered by a 2.0L turbo-diesel engine that produces 168hp of maximum power and 350Nm of peak torque. Now, even the Ford Endeavor is also powered by a 2.0L diesel engine that produces 168hp and 420Nm of peak torque. What this means is that the Safari isn't really underpowered in comparison to the costlier models.

Tata Safari Seats
The new Safari has a very usable third row of seats which can seat two adults in fair comfort for short journeys.

As for Tata not offering an all-wheel-drive system with the new Safari, the fact of the matter is that very few people actually pay the premium for an all-wheel-drive system. A majority of people buying full-size SUVs often opt for the 4x2 variants, with only a few opting for the top-spec 4x4 variants. Also, these SUVs are mostly used in the city and on highways and are barely taken off-road, thus never requiring a 4x4 system. The 2021 Tata Safari is still more than capable of mild off-roading on trails or broken mountain roads.

Moreover, Tata Motors has said that the Land Rover-derived Omega platform can be adapted to incorporate an all-wheel-drive system and if the market really demands, Tata could go the length to invest in an all-wheel-drive system for the Safari. Until then, we think top-spec variants of the Safari - particularly the Adventure Persona - make for a compelling buy. Moreover, choosing the top-spec Safari over the entry-level trims of large SUVs will even enable you to save a huge deal of money and still have an SUV with all the practicalities and capabilities you'd ever want.

Top 5 7-Seater SUVs You Can Buy in India: Tata Safari, MG Hector Plus and More https://indianautosblog.com/top-5-seven-seater-suvs-on-sale-p322472 Mon, 08 Feb 2021 15:15:20 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=322472 The launch of the Tata Safari has made the story in the 7-seater SUV segment of India a bit more interesting. With existing cars like MG Hector Plus and Mahindra XUV500 in the mid-premium range and SUVs like MG Gloster and Toyota Fortuner in the full-size range, the competition is set to get stiffer. Here is a refresher on all the top 5 key offerings in the 7-seater SUV segment that you can opt for buying -

Tata Safari

The 2021 Tata Safari is an extended version of the Harrier which was earlier known as the Gravitas. At the front, the Safari carries the same Harrier looks with the only exception being a slightly redesigned bumper at the rear. However, there is a considerable change in the roofline and space inside the SUV — the height has been raised and the rear has a more upright position, creating more space. The rear also includes a new-look for the tail-lamps. In terms of length, the Safari is longer and taller than the Harrier by 63 mm and 80 mm, respectively. To keep the look distinct and different from the Harrier, the Safari will have the option of new colors.

While the new Safari's dashboard design is similar to the Harrier, it gets Oyster White upholstery that adds airiness to the cabin. It has an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, 8.8-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system, keyless entry, panoramic sunroof and push-button start. It also has an electronic handbrake. While the Safari shares the same wheelbase as the Harrier at 2,741mm, initially it is being offered only as two-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive and electric versions will likely be offered in the future. When it comes to the engine, the Safari will be powered by the same 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine like Harrier. This engine can produce 170 bhp of power and 350 Nm of torque.

MG Gloster

MG Gloster is the third offering from the SAIC owned car maker who specializes in SUV making. For their third offering, they launched a full grown 7-seater SUV with advanced driving assistance technology usually seen on luxury cars. The car was at display during last year’s Auto Expo and design elements include an octagonal grille with chrome slats, LED headlamps with DRLs, fog lamps with round chrome bezel and sculpted bumper and hood. Also on offer are a set of dual-tone alloy wheels, bold shoulder creases, chrome around the window line, chrome door handles, LED tail-lights and roof rails.

In terms of interiors, the Gloster comes with all the top-notch features from the Hector including the brand’s connectivity features, like the i-Smart unit that has more than 100 voice-controlled features. There is a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an i-Smart suite with an integrated e-SIM that is independent of the user’s phone. Powering the car is a 2.0-litre twin-turbo four-cylinder diesel engine that delivers 218 PS at 4000 rpm and 480 Nm at 1,500-2,400 rpm. The motor pairs with an eight-speed torque-converter gearbox. Off-roading capabilities come in the form of on-demand four-wheel-drive system, a rear differential locker and a BorgWarner transfer case.

Toyota Fortuner

The Toyota Fortuner is the undoubted king of its segment and recently got a facelift with an updated face with redesigned LED headlamps which also include the LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL), updated grille and a new, more aggressive front bumper design. On the sides, the Fortuner gets new 18-inch alloy wheels and at the back, Toyota has given the updated Fortuner a set of new, slimmer LED tail lamps. On the insides, the car now gets a new 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system which now supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The other changes include the introduction of an 8-way power-adjustable and ventilated seats for front passengers, an 11-speaker JBL audio system, 360-degree camera for parking, parking sensors, and ambient lighting.

At its heart, the updated Toyota Fortuner continues to be powered by the same 2.7-litre petrol engine which makes 166 hp and 245 Nm of torque and is available with the option of a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The other engine option is the same 2.8-litre diesel engine as before which continues to make 177 hp and 420 Nm of torque along with the choice of a 6-speed manual. However, this engine can now also be had along with a new 6-speed torque converter gearbox that helps it makes 204hp and a massive 500 Nm of torque.

MG Hector Plus

The MG Hector Plus does not carry a lot of changes than its 5-seater sibling on the outside. However, in its recent iteration, 7-seater cabin option was added alongside a 6-seater cabin. The car comes with the same split headlight setup that sits on either side of the cascading grille. MG has slightly tweaked the bumper on both sides. The car sits on the same wheels as the Hector. And at the rear, the car gets slightly tweak taillights as well.

The Hector Plus come with one additional feature than the standard Hector, which is the automatic tailgate. Some of the other key features of the Hector Plus include a Panoramic Sunroof, a Chit-Chat i-SMART Next Gen interface, captain seats with recline and slide function, LED lighting, 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment and tyre pressure monitoring system. Like its 5-seater sibling, the Hector Plus comes with a 1.5-litre petrol engine rated 143 PS, a 1.5-litre hybrid engine that will output 143 PS and a 2.0-litre diesel engine that will deliver 170 PS. While the hybrid and diesel variants will be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, the petrol-only version will be offered with a DCT only.

Mahindra XUV500

Last on our list is the Mahindra XUV500. While the 7-seater SUV starts to feel dated in the world of Safaris and Hectors, it still holds a charm among good looking proper 7-seater SUVs. It is available in seven variants: W5, W7, W7 AT, W9, W9 AT, W11(O), and W11(O) AT. It is currently offered with a BS6-compliant 2.2-litre diesel engine that continues to put out 155PS and 360Nm. The SUV gets the option of a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter gearbox.

Mahindra XUV500 is offered with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 6-way adjustable driver seat, a sunroof, and cruise control. In terms of safety, the car gets dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors. That said, Mahindra will be launching the next-gen XUV500 in India this year and it will be huge departure from the current-gen model with lots of new tech and features.
