Nissan Leaf could be assembled in India to be priced close to INR 30 lakh - Report https://indianautosblog.com/nissan-leaf-assembled-india-price-inr-30-lakh-p319433 Tue, 14 Jan 2020 15:20:56 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=319433 The Nissan Leaf has been under consideration for the Indian market for a long time now. It has been spotted on several occasions in the past amidst road tests and was also seen at the Nissan Digital Hub in Thiruvananthapuram, powering a projector screen for an ICC Cricket World Cup match at a mall in Chennai in July 2019.

The Nissan Leaf was originally planned to be launched in India launch during the last fiscal (March 2018-April 2019), but that didn't happen. Plans for local production were ruled-out but now, if a report from ElectricVehicleWeb is to be believed, Nissan has is having second thoughts about the same. The company is interested in assembling the world's bestselling EV at its Oragadam plant.

Nissan is feeling confident about the investment and efforts required in assembling the Leaf in India, after seeing a strong response for Hyundai's Kona Electric and the high anticipation revolving around MG's ZS EV. The company wants to localise this model to an extent in order to sell it at close to INR 30 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Nissan Leaf is almost a decade old now since it first came into existence in 2010. In 2017, it had got a complete makeover.  The EV is already on sale in more than 50 countries around the globe.

As far as the mechanicals are concerned, the Nissan Leaf sources its power from the new EM57 electric motor which churns out 110 kW (150 PS)  at 3,283-9,795 rpm and 320 Nm of peak torque at 0-3,283 rpm. The motor's energy source is a 40 kWh Li-ion battery that can be fully charged-up using a 3 kW charger in 16 hours or in 8 hours using a 6 kW charger. Using a quick charger, it can be charged to 80% in just 40 minutes.  Its range in the JC08 test cycle has been scaled at 400 km.

Nissan plans to finally launch the Leaf in India later this year, at a price close to INR 30 lakh (ex-showroom).

There is also a Nissan Leaf e+, which comes kitted with a 62 kWh battery pack and a more potent version of the EM57 motor that churns out 218 PS at 4,600-5,800 rpm and 340 Nm of torque at 500-4,000 rpm. It has an exceptional range of 570 km (JC08 test cycle). It is highly unlikely for the Indian market launch due to its pricier proposition, though.

Nissan Leaf powers display screening ICC World Cup 2019 match in India [Video] https://indianautosblog.com/nissan-leaf-powers-display-screening-icc-world-cup-2019-match-in-india-p317710 Tue, 02 Jul 2019 02:05:03 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=317710 The Leaf has worked a lot of wonders for Nissan in the past. From emerging as one of the pioneers along full electric cars to rising at the top of the game by being the highest selling electric car around the world, the Nissan Leaf has seen it all. Needless to say, the new generation Nissan Leaf is following the same path as its predecessor by being a stalwart of innovations.

The Nissan Leaf has added one more feather to its glorious cap, by introducing another pure innovation to the masses. Being one of the major sponsors of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019, Nissan, as a part of campaign, utilized the opportunity of showcasing a brilliant talent of the Leaf to Indian masses. Nissan recently displayed the all electric Leaf to the people of Chennai at Express Avenue Mall, where the red coloured display model of the Nissan Leaf powered a one-of-a-kind screen which showed the India-Afghanistan ICC Cricket World Cup league match on it.

This is one of the nice innovations which had already made its debut in the previous generation model of Nissan Leaf. This technology of powering a television screen is a part of Leaf’s “Vehicle to home” electricity supply system. As per this system, it allows a person to supply the energy stored in the battery of a Nissan Leaf to power various devices in your home.

How this technology works, you ask? Well, you need to install a PCS (Power Control System) and connect it to household’s distribution board, while power is supplied from the lithium-ion battery of the car. All this process needs to be done while the distribution board is already connected to the DC quick charge port of the Nissan Leaf. The PCS also allows the owner of the Nissan Leaf to charge the battery of the car from the household power supply.

While there have been a lot of sightings of the Nissan Leaf in various cities of India in recent times, Nissan has still not disclosed the exact time frame of when this all-electric car will be launched in the country. For those who don’t know, the Nissan Leaf is already the world’s highest selling all-electric car. The EM57 electric motor under the hood of the Nissan Leaf is capable of producing 150PS of maximum power and 320Nm of peak torque motor. With a promising maximum range of 400km, the Leaf’s motor is powered by a 40kWh Li-ion battery which takes 16 hours (with a 3kW charger) and 8 hours (using a 6kW charger) for being fully charged up.

The Nissan Leaf is the best-selling electric car on the planet, with over 4 lakh units sold worldwide till date.

The Nissan Leaf's Indian launch was planned to be launched during the last fiscal (March 2018-April 2019), but it is now obviously delayed due to some unconfirmed reasons.

The Nissan Leaf currently rules the EV market on the planet. Till date, Nissan has sold over 4 lakh units of the same around the globe. Originally came into existence in 2010, the world's most famous EV got a complete overhaul in 2017. It is already on sale in more than 50 countries around the globe, and Nissan now wants to push it to 6 new markets in Latin America by June and 7 new markets in Asia and Oceania by December 2019.

The world's most loved EV is powered by the new EM57 electric motor which generates 10 kW (150 PS) of maximum power at 3,283-9,795 rpm and 320 Nm of peak torque at 0-3,283 rpm. The electric motor works draws energy from a 40 kWh Li-ion battery that takes 16 hours (using a 3 kW charger)/8 hours (using a 6 kW charger) for getting fully charged up. There is also a Leaf e+ variant which packs a 62 kWh battery pack and benefits from a more powerful version of the EM57 motor. This version has a range of 570 km (JC08 test cycle) which is exceptional by all standards. Since Leaf e+ will prove to be very costly for the Indian market, it's launch is highly unlikely.

The Nissan Leaf will be launched in India later this year.

The premium EV was showcased last month at the company's first Digital Hub in India in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

The Nissan Leaf is likely to come to us via CBU route and would cost more than INR 40 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Nissan Leaf has been the world's best-selling electric vehicle. In India, the premium EV will be positioned as a niche offering that will showcase the carmaker's muscle in electric powertrain technology. Furthermore, the premium model should help the company understand the performance of electric cars in the Indian context. These learnings will be put to use on the locally produced, low-cost electric vehicle that will suit emerging markets.

The current-gen Nissan Leaf was previewed by the Nissan IDS Concept the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. Its front-end features the company's signature V-motion grille, sleek headlamps that carry LED fixtures, a large greenhouse, floating-effect roof, dual-tone machined alloy rims, and wrap-around tail lamps. It is 4,480 mm long, 1,790 mm wide, 1,540 mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,700 mm.

The electric powertrain of the Nissan Leaf offers a maximum power of 150 hp and a peak torque of 320 Nm. It is claimed to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds. The second-gen Leaf became the first EV to undergo WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Testing Procedure), as per which it offers a driving range of up to 168 miles on the Combined Cycle, or up to 258 miles in city conditions, on a single charge.

Nissan Leaf & Nissan Note e-Power spied in Kerala [Update] https://indianautosblog.com/nissan-leaf-nissan-note-e-power-india-p315604 Thu, 20 Dec 2018 05:01:19 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=315604 Update: YouTube users Relaxee and Anupam Sharma have uploaded a quick walkaround video of the Nissan Leaf and Nissan Note e-Power respectively.

7 December -

Nissan has imported a red-coloured Leaf and an orange-coloured Note e-Power and these were seen in Kerala. According to a report from engineported, these will go on display at Nissan Digital Hub in Technopark Phase III, Yamuna in Thiruvananthapuram.

Nissan Leaf Rear Three Quarters India Spy Shot
The Nissan Leaf's launch in India should take place around March next year.

The Nissan Leaf is probably the same unit that was on display at MOVE Summit 2018 in September. The launch is confirmed for FY2018, but with the Kicks already at the starting gate and slated for arrival in January 2019, we see that happening around March. Nissan has wanted to launch the Leaf here since 2009 when the car was in its first generation.

The second-gen Nissan Leaf measures 4,480 mm in length, 1,790 mm in width and 1,540 mm in height. It has a 2,700 mm wheelbase. Powering the globally acclaimed eco car is the new EM57 electric motor that generates 110 kW (150 PS) at 3,283-9,795 rpm and 320 Nm of torque at 0-3,283 rpm. This motor gets its juice from a 40 kWh Li-ion battery that takes 16 hours (using a 3 kW charger)/8 hours (using a 6 kW charger) for full charging. Using a quick charger, 80% charging from alert is achieved in just 40 minutes. The EV has a cruising range of 400 km*.

The Note e-Power is likely the same unit we saw in spy shots from its road testing last year. While the fully imported Nissan Leaf will serve as a technology demonstrator, it is the Note that will appeal to the masses. A launch is under consideration, but we don’t expect that before the next full model change. e-Power technology is likely even on the next-gen Nissan Sunny.

The Nissan Note e-Power is form of a series hybrid. It employs the HR12DE 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine (79 PS/103 Nm) and the old EM57 electric motor (of the first generation Nissan Leaf). The combustion engine’s only purpose is that of a generator. The electric motor produces 109 PS and 254 Nm of torque. The engine charges a 1.5 kWh battery, which powers the electric motor. There’s no need for an external charger.

Nissan is considering the Note e-Power for India, but we don’t expect that before the next full model change.

e-Power gives the driving experience of an EV, although not at the same level of eco-friendliness. The engine is not connected to the wheels, and it always operates at its optimum condition — the result: 30% better fuel efficiency than conventional petrol cars with similar output. The fuel efficiency is comparable to that of leading conventional hybrids. The Nissan Note e-Power has a fuel economy rating of up to 37.2 km/l*.

The Nissan Leaf will come to India via the CBU route and is expected to cost more than INR 40 lakh.

While the Nissan Leaf is the world's best-selling EV, it will be a niche product for India that will showcase the company's prowess in modern and upmarket electric vehicles. Moreover, it should help the manufacturer understand the local electric car market better. While Nissan India realises that the Leaf won't sell in significant numbers, it intends to use the learnings to develop a locally produced, low-cost electric car that will be tailor-made for emerging markets like that of India.

The second-gen Leaf measures 4,480 mm in length, 1,790 mm in width, and 1,540 mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2,700 mm. Previewed by the Nissan IDS Concept at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, the Leaf features the company's signature V-motion grille, LED headlamps with the distinctive boomerang design, a floating-effect roof, and stylish wraparound taillights.

Powering the Nissan Leaf is the EM57 electric motor, which produces a maximum power of 110 kW (150 PS) and a peak torque of 320 Nm. The powertrain gets its juice from a 40 kWh Lithium-ion battery that can be charged completely in 16 hours through a 3 kW charger/8 hours using a 6 kW charger. That said, the battery can be replenished to 80% of its capacity in just 40 minutes through a fast charger.

The second-gen Nissan Leaf offers a driving range of 400 km (Japan JC08). In the international spec, the EV comes with a handful of advanced technologies, including e-Pedal, ProPILOT and ProPILOT Park. The former facilitates driving (starting, accelerating, decelerating and stopping) using just the accelerator pedal. The ProPILOT technology allows single-lane autonomous driving, while the ProPILOT Park technology offers autonomous parking.

It is displaying the Kicks, Leaf, Note e-Power and Patrol, as seen in an image posted by Suja Chandy, MD, Nissan Digital India.

The Nissan Leaf is confirmed for India, while the Nissan Note e-Power and Nissan Patrol are under evaluation.

The Nissan Digital Hub is the first of many software and IT development centres in Asia, Europe and North America, home for 50% of Nissan’s worldwide digital workforce. Artificial Intelligence, cybersecurity and data science are Nissan Digital Hub's focus areas. The work done here will support technology enabling of electric and autonomous cars for the Japanese automaker.

Nissan has long-desired to bring the Leaf to our market, and it has finally decided to realize it in the car’s second generation. The company has confirmed its launch in the final quarter of this financial year (January-March 2019).

The Nissan Note e-Power is a model under consideration for India. The car’s e-Power electric technology is an even stronger candidate. A small combustion engine generates electrical energy that is transferred to a low-capacity battery. An electric motor uses this energy to drive the wheels. The decision to launch entirely depends on how flexible the Indian government’s EV policy is, as in if it can classify e-Power models like EVs for subsidies. Even in the affirmative, we might have to wait until the next-gen model is ready for launch.

Now, a new report from Autocar India says that the launch will take place this calendar year, most likely in the fourth quarter (October-December).

The Nissan Leaf will arrive in India as a CBU import.

Nissan has been mulling over the Leaf’s Indian launch for years now. The car will go on sale in India in its second generation avatar. Like the Nissan GT-R, it will be a niche product in our market. However, the purpose of this model is not only to enhance the brand image but also to understand the market for electric vehicles. The Japanese automaker expects to sell only a handful of the Leafs here, but it will use the learnings from it to work on a locally manufactured, low-cost EV developed specifically for emerging markets like ours.

The all-new Nissan Leaf is 4,480 mm long, 1,790 mm wide and 1,540 mm high. It has a 2,700 mm wheelbase and a 150 mm ground clearance. Powering the C-segment hatchback is the new EM57 electric motor that generates 110 kW (150 PS) and 320 Nm of torque. A 40 kWh Lithium-ion battery is standard. Charging it fully takes 16 hours (using a 3 kW charger)/8 hours (using a 6 kW charger). Charging it from alert to 80% using a quick charger takes only 40 minutes.

The second-gen Nissan Leaf delivers a range (JC08 test cycle) of 400 km. Along with an impressive range, it offers some advanced technologies such as e-Pedal, ProPILOT and ProPILOT Park. e-Pedal gives the convenience of driving (starting, accelerating, decelerating and stopping) using just the accelerator pedal. The ProPILOT technology is used for single-lane autonomous driving on highways, while the ProPILOT Park technology is for autonomous parking.

The new generation Nissan Leaf will be imported in CBU form, likely from the Oppama Plant in Japan. It could end up costing somewhere between INR 40 lakh (ex-showroom) and INR 50 lakh (ex-showroom) as the government is yet to announce incentives for EVs imported as CBUs.

Nissan Leaf to be launched in India this financial year - Report https://indianautosblog.com/nissan-leaf-launched-india-this-financial-year-p307016 Sat, 09 Jun 2018 07:52:12 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=307016 Nissan had first spoke about launching the Nissan Leaf in India back in 2009. However, the EV never arrived. Now in its second generation, the company has announced a firm plan to launch the EV here, by March 2019.

The Nissan Leaf will arrive in India as a CBU import.

The Nissan Leaf is the world’s best-selling EV and the company is going aggressive with its launch worldwide. While the focus was on Japan, USA and Europe initially, the Nissan Leaf is now available in 51 markets worldwide. Soon, Nissan will launch it in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, New Zealand and even India.

In a recent media roundtable, Nissan India President Thomas Kuehl said: “We will come very soon with the EV car, in this fiscal year.” He added -

We will bring the Leaf 2 to India.

Mr. Kuehl admits that the Nissan Leaf will not sell in big volumes in our market. Still, the EV will be homologated here, and work on that has already begun. A fleet of demo cars is going to be imported for test drives in Chennai.

The Nissan Leaf will not be locally assembled. It is manufactured in Japan, the USA, and the UK. India will likely get its version from Japan, where production takes place at the Oppama Plant. The battery-powered hatchback will come at a steep price. A price tag north of INR 40 lakhs thanks to heavy import duties is expected. Nissan has approached the government to get concessions to support eco-friendly cars, but it is unlikely to receive much support.

The second generation Nissan Leaf measures 4,480 mm in length, 1,790 mm in width and 1,540 mm in height. It has a 2,700 mm wheelbase and a 150 mm ground clearance. It employs an upgraded version of the new EM57 electric motor that generates 110 kW (150 PS) and 320 Nm of torque. This electric motor gets its juice from a standard 40 kWh Lithium-ion battery that takes 16 hours (using a 3 kW charger)/8 hours (using a 6 kW charger) to get fully charged. Using a quick charger, the battery takes only 40 minutes to reach from alert to 80% capacity.

The Nissan Leaf offers a range (JC08 test cycle) of 400 km. It features the ProPILOT technology for single-lane autonomous driving on highways, the ProPILOT Park technology for autonomous parking and the e-Pedal technology that allows the driver to start, accelerate, decelerate and stop using just the accelerator pedal.

The Nissan Leaf will be a niche product for an import restrictive and price-sensitive market like India. Nissan eventually wants to launch a locally manufactured, low-cost EV that can fetch big volumes from the domestic market and be exported too. It is considering a pricing of around INR 7 lakh for this car.

At this forum, the Nissan Leaf Open Car was unveiled.

Nissan has sold more than 3,20,000 units of the Nissan Leaf globally.

As seen in the images, the Nissan Leaf Open Car is a roofless second-gen Nissan Leaf. It is most likely just a show car. Nissan has not announced a roofless Nissan leaf or a convertible Nissan Leaf for production. However, as part of its M.O.V.E. to 2022 midterm plan, it has confirmed plans to develop eight new pure electric vehicles. By FY2022, the company aims to sell 1 million electrified vehicles - either pure electric or those with e-Power powertrains - annually.

The first-ever Nissan Leaf went on sale in Japan in December 2010. The second generation Nissan Leaf followed in October 2017. Globally, more than 3,20,000 units are plying on the roads. The first generation Nissan Leaf came with a 24 kWh battery pack that offered a 200 km driving range (JC08 mode) initially. In November 2012, Nissan made some improvements and increased the driving range to 228 km (JC08 mode). A 30 kWh battery pack that delivers a 280 km driving range was introduced as an option in December 2015.

The conventionally designed second-generation Nissan Leaf has an even bigger, 40 kWh battery pack, that too as standard. It offers a 400 km driving range (JC08 mode). It uses an improved version of the EM57 electric motor that generates 150 PS at 3,283-,9,795 rpm and 320 Nm of torque at 0-3,283 rpm. The Lithium-ion battery takes 16 hours (3 kW charger)/8 hours (6 kW charger) to get fully charged. Using a quick charger, charging from alert to 80% takes only 40 minutes.

Nissan is evaluating the Nissan Leaf for India, but it does not plan to locally produce it. This means that, if green-lit, the world’s best-selling EV will arrive as a niche product in our market. The company has also been running test mules of the  Nissan Note e-Power in India.

Local production of Nissan Leaf in India ruled out - Report https://indianautosblog.com/nissan-rules-local-production-nissan-leaf-india-p295812 Tue, 16 Jan 2018 07:04:08 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=295812 Nissan is chalking out plans to bring the Nissan Leaf to India. Selling the EV in big volumes will require local production, but the company is ruling out that move, reports The Times of India.

Nissan builds the second-gen Nissan Leaf in Japan, the UK and the USA currently.

Nissan is conducting a feasibility study for the second-gen model but does not intend to manufacture it in India. Speaking to The Economic Times on that matter, Nicholas Thomas, EV programme director, Nissan, said: “It (all-new Nissan Leaf) will be a niche category product.”

The Nissan Leaf falls in the C-segment internationally, and this segment is close to non-existent for hatchbacks in India. Regardless, the world’s best-selling EV is a complex product to manufacture that would require a massive investment. There are many other such other demotivating factors making little sense for Nissan to set up a production facility for the Leaf in the country. Currently, the company builds the zero-emissions EV at the Oppama plant in Japan, the Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant in the USA and the Sunderland Plant in the UK.

Nissan could bring the Nissan Leaf to India via the CKD route from Japan. The company will use the model to understand the market and likely incorporate the learnings into a new EV developed specially for emerging markets. It is studying a low-cost EV priced around INR 7 lakh for India and other Asian countries. This model, if green-lit, will roll out from an Indian plant for domestic and export sales.
