On July 28, Frank Torres, President, Nissan India, members of Nissan’s management team alongside Shri Sanjay Kumar - General manager CS & BD, Shri M Gunasekaran - General manager Finance & operations, Captain G M Balan - General Manager Marine Services flagged off the one-millionth vehicle – a Nissan Magnite - for export from Kamarajar port.

Nissan India has exported vehicles from Chennai’s Kamarajar Port Ltd (formerly Ennore Port Ltd.) to various regions including Middle Eastern countries, Europe, Latin America, New Zealand, Australia, South-East Asia, SAARC countries and Sub Sahara and Africa. In recent years, Nissan India has transitioned its primary export market from Europe to the Middle East regions like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait.

In recent months, the plant has accelerated operations to respond to surging demand for the Nissan Magnite in the Indian and overseas markets. The Nissan Magnite, a runaway success for Nissan India, has been pivotal to the achievement of the one million export record. Emerging as a disruptor SUV in the Indian auto market, its sharp, distinctive visual appeal, power packed-performance, hi-tech features, and unparalleled safety has drawn customers.

The Nissan Magnite Red Edition features stylish exterior with a distinctive red accent that covers the front grille, front bumper cladding, wheel arch and body side cladding. The interior also gets red treatment with a premium red-theme dashboard, a red accent on the door side armrest and centre console. Major design additions include bold body graphics, a tail door garnish, and a prominent REd Edition-specific badge. The Red Edition retains the R16 diamond-cut alloy wheels, an LED fog lamp, and LED Daytime Running Lamps (DRLs), completing its striking presence.

Since its launch, 50,000 Magnites have been produced in Chennai, despite the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic and ongoing semiconductor shortage.

Since engine production began in 2010, the plant has manufactured 2.3 million engines and 1.2 million gearboxes. The landmark unit was an HRA0 TURBO engine – known for its efficiency and responsiveness – and available in the ‘Big Bold and Beautiful’ Nissan Magnite.

Powertrain production at Chennai created history within the Indian automotive sector when the Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Limited (RNAIPL) team rolled out 1 lakh engines in just 14 months. The plant went on to produce 1 million engines within six years.

RNAIPL can produce six engine variants as well as four gearbox types from its state-of-the-art powertrain facility. These plans, however, could be challenged by way of global shortage of semiconductor chips as well as the Covid-19 situation in the country.

But here we have something a little more serious than a mild off-road trail. Here in this video, the owner of this Nissan Magnite takes his car on the treacherous Kailash Mansarovar route in Uttarakhand, which is one of the most broken and difficult roads to drive on in the state of Uttarakhand. Most of route is just a trail of gravel and rocks, with streams and slush pits in between, worsened all the more by heavy rains the previous night. This is, in fact, a serious test for any SUV with a 4x4 system, let alone a front-wheel drive sub-compact SUV.

This particular Nissan Magnite is powered by the naturally aspirated 1.0L petrol engine that produces 72hp and 96Nm of peak torque. The transmission is a 5-speed manual unit and it seems to be in a mid-spec trim. The Magnite's 1.0L NA petrol engine is the most underpowered engine in its class, and it would be interesting to see how it fares in such conditions. At the beginning of the vlog, the owner says he wanted to drive to Ladakh in his Magnite, and the Kailash Mansarovar stretch was a test to see how the Magnite fared in rugged conditions. And it couldn't have been more challenging than this.

As you can see in the video, even with its base 1.0L NA engine, the Magnite does not struggle all that much when off-road conditions are mostly moderate. With a slow and steady pace, the Magnite owner progressed smoothly over the rocky and gravel trail, only disrupted by the slush pits in between. Still, with a little bit of planning, the Magnite was able to overcome all the slush pits even without a four-wheel drive system. It must be said that the car's capabilities depends a lot on the driver as well. For getting the front-wheel drive Magnite through those slush pits, it is the driver who has to be credited.

The Nissan Magnite has a ground clearance of 205mm, which was enough to get the SUV over most obstacles, although the car did bottom out over some bigger rocks. Where the Magnite seemed to struggle were on the really steep climbs. Sometimes wheel spinning, sometimes needing a push, it was eventually able to overcome them all. It had almost no problems on less steep climbs, primarily aided by the fact that it's pretty light weight and the engine did not have to haul a heavy weight. With the more powerful 100hp 1.0L turbo-petrol engine, this should be even smoother. The fact is, if you are a skilled driver, you can do a fair bit of off-roading even in a sub-compact SUV such as Nissan Magnite. That takes away nothing from the car, but only upholds its abilities.

The factory workers who had started the strike stated that a few workers have died because of Covid-19 related complications. The employees have been demanding stricter safety protocols in the manufacturing facility that was operating three shifts due to the high demand for the Renault Kiger and the Nissan Magnite. The workers filed a complaint in court and informed that social distancing in the facility can only be possible if a gap between two vehicles in the assembly line is maintained. They suggested that three to four men work on a vehicle instead of the current setup of six to eight men working on a single unit in the assembly line.

The workers have demanded that the Renault-Nissan manufacturing facility authorities should take corrective measures at the earliest and social distancing rules be enforced more strictly. Other demands from the workers include rehabilitation of the families of the workers who have died because of COVID-19 and medical treatment of the workers who are ailing from the infection.

Both the Renault Kiger and the Nissan Magnite became instant hits upon their launch in the Indian market. Their attractive design, feature-packed variants, and very aggressive pricing have made Indian consumers gravitate towards them. The two subcompact SUVs are the most affordable offerings in the segment. Currently, the Kiger has an 8-week waiting period, while the same stretch to up to 28 weeks for the Magnite. As mentioned above, the automaker is currently producing the two subcompact SUVs in three shifts at its manufacturing facility to meet the demands.

Prices for the Nissan Magnite range between Rs 5.59 - Rs 10.00 Lakh while the Renault Kiger is priced between Rs 5.45 - 10.08 Lakh, ex-showroom.

First up, let's eliminate the single and dual-tone color options from the list as that's a completely subjective affair. It, however, must be mentioned that the dual-tone color options are offered only on the top three trims. Further, Nissan is offering two petrol engine options with the Magnite here in India. There's a 72hp, 1.0L naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 100hp 1.0L turbo-petrol engine. The base 1.0L engine solely comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox while the turbo-petrol engine additionally also gets the option of a CVT automatic gearbox. While the base 1.0L engine is available on all but the top trim, the turbo-petrol engine is available on all but the base trim, in both manual and automatic versions.

With this aside, let's now take a closer look at what features Nissan is offering with each of the individual trims on the Magnite.

Nissan Magnite XE (Price - INR 5.59 lakh)

This is the base variant of the Nissan Magnite that's solely offered with the 1.0L NA engine and a 5-speed manual gearbox. Priced at INR 5.59 lakh (ex-showroom), it not only undercuts the entry-level price of most other sub-compact SUVs but is even more affordable than some entry-level models of some premium hatchbacks. However, it's really bare-bones in terms of equipment and does not have much value to offer as such. Here's a look at the features on offer.

It's offered with all powertrain options - NA and turbo-petrol engines, the latter available with both manual and automatic gearboxes. It also isn't as bare-bones as the base XE trim as it gets a 2-Din audio system, automatic climate control, wheel covers, and much more, thus covering all the basic essentials. The XV Premium (O) variant brings in Nissan's connected car technology called 'Nissan Connect'. It is, however, only offered with the turbo-petrol engine with both manual and automatic gearbox options. Here's a closer look at what connected car technology brings in.

So what's the verdict?

If you are constrained by budget, our pick of the lot would be the XL trim in the turbo-petrol CVT spec. This variant costs INR 8.39 lakh (ex-showroom) and for that money, you not only get the convenience of an automatic gearbox with a well-tuned CVT, you also get a punchy turbo-petrol engine. It also decently well equipped, covering all the essentials needs you would expect in a car at this price point. However, if budget is not a problem, we'd advise you to go for the top-spec XV Premium (O) trim with the turbo-petrol engine, opting for either the manual or CVT gearbox. The Nissan Magnite comes across as an extremely good value-for-money offering, particularly in its top-spec trims, offering you features previously unheard of at this price point.
