The engine comes paired with a 6-speed MT or a 6-speed AT. That said, the replacement of the XUV500 will be an all-new model that will be positioned above the current model, and even gets a new name - XUV700.

Mahindra XUV700 - What To Expect

The Mahindra XUV700 is going to be one of the most exciting new launches of the year. It's a huge departure from the current-gen model with completely new exterior and interior styling. Perhaps the biggest talking about the new XUV700 will be its expansive features list. Not only does the new XUV700 feature a Mercedes-like dual digital screen setup, it is also expected to come with Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Much like the new MG Hector Plus and the Tata Safari, the next-gen XUV500 will also likely be offered in both 6-seater and 7-seater configurations.

Front Side Look Of Mahindra Xuv700
This new Mahindra XUV700 will be a huge departure from the current XUV500, even being positioned a segment higher.

Built on a stiffer monocoque platform, the new XUV700 will have two engine options under its hood - 2.0L turbo-petrol engine and the 2.2L mHawk diesel engine that the company debuted with the new Thar. - with both manual and automatic gearbox options. It could, however, come in a higher state of tune than what is available with the Thar. Mahindra will even offer an all-wheel-drive system in the mix, likely reserved for higher variants. The new Mahindra XUV700 is expected to be priced at a premium over the Mahindra XUV500. That will put it against the likes of the Tata Safari, MG Hector Plus and the upcoming Hyundai Alcazar.

Codenamed the W601, Mahindra has just revealed that the upcoming  XUV500 will be known as the XUV700 in India. This new nameplate means the new model will be likely a 7-seater version, with the current XUV500 continuing to be on sale or perhaps use it for a new 5-seat version. The new Mahindra XUV700 is slated to be launched around October this year and will be produced at the automaker’s Chakan facility in Pune, Maharashtra. Today we have this render of what the production XUV700 may look like.

2022 Mahindra Xuv700 Rendering
The upcoming Mahindra XUV700 looks quite appealing in a digital rendering that has been created based on the various spy images that we've come across.

Our in-house rendering specialist SRK Designs is the creator of this Mahindra XUV700 render. Though the general silhouette remains similar, the XUV700 comes with a few notable changes. Looking at the front-end, the grille is considerable bigger that is flanked by new all-LED headlamps. The LED DRls are an integral design element, connecting with the headlamps and dropping down to the bumper. The bumper itself looks to be larger than the outgoing model and has a wide and low air intake. The side profile goes for a smoother design with flush-fitting door handles than the outgoing model’s flared wheel arches. The alloys are a new diamond-cut multi-spoke design that looks to be 18-inches at least.

Although the interiors haven’t been rendered, spy images of the Mahindra XUV700 reveal that it will come with a twin-screen setup for the instrument cluster and the infotainment system. The new system will sit atop the dashboard while the overall fit and finish are reported to be much better than the current XUV500. The XUV700 is also slated to be the first SUV in the segment to come with Level 1 autonomous driving technology, which brings in features like autonomous emergency braking, parallel park assist, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and more.

Powertrain options haven’t been confirmed by Mahindra yet, but it is speculated that it will come with the new 2-litre turbo-petrol and the 2.2-litre diesel engine that the automaker recently debuted with the 2020 Thar. In the XUV700, Mahindra may offer the engines with a higher state of tune than the Thar.

The brand’s attempt indeed turned out to be a successful one. However, now after being on sale for around a decade, the Mahindra XUV500 has started to show its age. Well, Mahindra has all the ears towards the consumers and is developing a new-gen model of the XUV500, which is slated to go on sale by sometime this year. Test mules of the new Mahindra XUV500 have been spotted numerous times to date, but Mahindra has still not confirmed the official launch/unveil date of the SUV. Annoyed with the never-ending wait for the new Mahindra XUV500, a fan did something crazy.

Mahindra Xuv500 Spotted On Moon Rear 3 Quarters
The Mahindra XUV500 fan has photoshopped the image of the test mule to make it look it is on test on the moon.

As can be seen in the above image, the XUV500 fan has photoshopped a test prototype of the upcoming new-gen model of the car on the moon. The image was uploaded on a social media platform by Ravijit Singh Dhiman. Test mules of the new XUV500 have been spotted in almost every corner of the country by now. Hence, the fan might’ve thought that the moon is the only place left to become the testing ground for the new Mahindra XUV500 prototypes. Since the mules of the upcoming new-gen Mahindra XUV500 are on roads in production-ready guise, they have revealed a lot about the upcoming SUV.

Design-wise, the new-gen model will be a completely different one in comparison to the outgoing car. However, it will continue to retain some XUV500-typical design cues, like the 7-slat radiator grille and the curvy rear wheel arches. Interestingly, there will be some futuristic touches on the outside, such as Tesla-like door handles, panoramic sunroof, all-LED lighting, and more. Additionally, the feature list will include powered front seats with memory function, ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control and more. Also, a Mercedes-like twin-display setup will be present on the dashboard.

The engine options will include a new 2.0L 150PS mStallion turbo-petrol unit and the existing 130 PS 2.2L mHawk oil burner. These engines will be available with two gearbox choices – 6-speed MT and 6-speed AT. Prices for the new-gen Mahindra XUV500 are expected to start from INR 14 lakh. Once launched, the new Mahindra XUV500 will compete with the likes of Tata Safari and MG Hector Plus.

Top 5 Seven-Seater SUVs in India - Hyundai, MG, & More https://indianautosblog.com/top-5-seven-seater-suvs-india-p323154 Fri, 16 Apr 2021 05:15:24 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=323154 The launch of the Hyundai Alcazar is likely to make the story in the 7-seater SUV segment a bit more interesting. Alcazar, a bigger derivative of the Creta SUV essentially gets a three-row seating with a 6- and 7- seater cabin option and a new 2.0-litre engine to entice the buyers looking to buy an SUV that is also practical. Right now, there are hardly any products below INR 15 Lakh in this segment. As the competition is set to get stiffer, here is a refresher on all the key offerings that operate in the same segment.

Hyundai Alcazar

Hyundai is expected to launch the Alcazar in May. The three-row SUV could be priced between INR 12 lakh to INR 18 lakh depending on the variant. It will be available in both 6- and 7-seater configurations. At its heart, the Alzacar will come with two engines: 2.0-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel units. The petrol engine is the same one that powers the Elantra and Tucson but in a slightly higher state of tune to produce 159 PS and 191 Nm while the diesel engine is the same as the Creta’s with 115 PS and 250 Nm. Both engines will be available with the option of 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions. It also comes with three drive modes: Eco, City And Sport.

The Alcazar will be equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, ventilated front seats, a semi-digital instrument cluster, and wireless charging. Hyundai’s three-row SUV will also get a larger digital instrument cluster. In terms of safety, the car could feature multiple airbags, a rear parking camera as well as front and rear parking sensors. In the domestic market, the car will go up against the MG Hector Plus, Mahindra XUV500, Tata Safari, and the Mahindra XUV700.

MG Hector Plus

The MG Hector Plus does not carry a lot of changes than its 5-seater sibling Hector. The Hector Plus is aimed at being a more premium version of the Hector. Hence, a few elements that work for the same include tan coloured leather upholstery. While the rest of the features are carried over from the Hector, the Plus version gets an additional seat. Ditching the conventional bench seat for the second row, the Hector Plus ships with captain seats for the second row and a bench for the third. MG clarifies that the third seat might not be apt for accommodating an adult, which is solely meant for kids.

The Hector Plus come with one additional feature than the standard Hector, which is the automatic tailgate. Some of the other key features of the Hector Plus include a Panoramic Sunroof, a Chit-Chat i-SMART Next Gen interface, captain seats with recline and slide function, LED lighting, 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment and tyre pressure monitoring system. Like its 5-seater sibling, the Hector Plus comes with a 1.5-litre petrol engine rated 143 PS, a 1.5-litre hybrid engine that will output 143 PS and a 2.0-litre diesel engine that will deliver 170 PS. While the hybrid and diesel variants will be mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, the petrol-only version will be offered with a DCT only.

Tata Safari

The 2021 Tata Safari is an extended version of the Harrier. At the front, it carries the same looks, the only exception being a slightly redesigned bumper in the rear. However, there is a considerable change in the roofline and space inside the SUV — the height has been raised and the rear has a more upright position, creating more space. The new Safari's dashboard design and interiors are similar to the Harrier. It gets an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, 8.8-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system, keyless entry, panoramic sunroof and push-button start. It also has an electronic handbrake.

While the Safari shares the same wheelbase as the Harrier at 2,741 mm, it also shares the drivetrain, which means it is available only as a two-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive and electric versions are in the offing in future. When it comes to the engine, the Safari will be powered by the same 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine as Harrier. This engine can produce 170 bhp of power and 350 Nm of torque. The Tata Safari competes with MG Hector Plus and has a starting price of INR 14.70 lakh*.

Mahindra XUV500

The Mahindra XUV500 is the sole premium 7-seater SUV from the brand and has been a successful product, with the last update introduced in 2018. Prices for the Mahindra XUV500 starts from INR 13.16 lakh* and goes up to INR 18.88 lakh*. The car is available in seven variants: W5, W7, W7 AT, W9, W9 AT, W11(O), and W11(O) AT. It is now offered with a BS6-compliant 2.2-litre diesel engine that continues to put out 155 PS and 360 Nm. The SUV gets the option of a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter gearbox.

Mahindra XUV500 is offered with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 6-way adjustable driver seat, a sunroof, and cruise control. In terms of safety, the car gets dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors. In the domestic market, the car takes on the likes of the Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson, Toyota Innova Crysta, and MG Hector. Mahindra has announced to launch the all-new XUV500 and will rename it as the XUV700. Possibilities are Mahindra will retain the XUV500 as it is.

Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace

Last on our list is a bit expensive, a bit unconventional, yet an exciting product, especially for those looking for a premium product for the daily urban commute. The Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace can be bought in a single fully-loaded variant priced at INR 33.24 lakh*. The car offers a 7-seater layout and comes with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that develops 190 PS and 320 Nm. This unit comes paired with a 7-speed DSG transmission option. Volkswagen offers the Tiguan Allspace with an all-wheel-drive (AWD).

VW Tiguan Allspace Side View

The XUV700 will be replacing the current ageing Mahindra XUV500. In fact, it will be sitting above the outgoing model as it will be significantly larger, will be way more premium on the inside and loaded with tech and gadgets. We've seen some spy images of the upcoming Mahindra XUV700 over time, and based on these spy photos, here we have a Mahindra XUV700 360 view, created by our in-house digital artist Shoeb R. Kalania.

The upcoming XUV700 looks a lot more handsome than the current-gen XUV500 in this rendering. Based on previously seen spy shots, we can confirm that the XUV700 will continue with Mahindra's drop-down LED DRL lighting theme as we have seen with the Mahindra XUV300. The one on the XUV700 will, however, be C-shaped and it looks quite quirky. The headlamps are expected to be full-LED units on the top-spec variants. The radiator grille has also grown larger than before and features Mahindra's typical seven-slatted design. Although the face has a resemblance to the current model, it looks significantly more stylish.

The door panels are well sculpted, but the wheel arches aren't as flared as the current-gen model. The upcoming SUV will also feature flush-fitting door handles, a first in the segment. The SUV is also expected to feature body cladding all around that will add to its rugged appeal. It will also get a new twin five-spoke design for the alloy wheels. At the rear, the XUV700 is expected to feature a nice layered effect for the tailgate. In this rendering, it can also be seen with slim and sleek LED tail lamps, a black contrasting trim in between the taillights and a bold looking bumper.

The Mahindra XUV700 has been spied testing on our roads on several occasions.

Mahindra has also revealed a few interesting technical details about the upcoming XUV700. It will be based on the stiffer W601 monocoque platform and will be considerably larger - both in terms of length and width - than the current-gen XUV500. Mahindra has also confirmed that it will be offered with both petrol and diesel engines along with manual and automatic gearbox options. Hardcore SUV lovers will be very pleased with the fact that the XUV700 will even come with an all-wheel-drive system.

Although Mahindra has not revealed many details about the engine options, we suspect it will be powered by the brand new 2.0L turbo-petrol engine and the 2.2L mHawk diesel engine that the company recently debuted with the all-new Thar. It could however come in a higher state of tune than what is available with the Thar. It will be manufactured at Mahindra's Chakan facility in Pune, Maharashtra, and is slated to be launched sometime in Q2 of FY2022. It is pretty revered among Mahindra fans for its butch and muscular looks, spacious cabin and aggressive price positioning. In its segment, it rivals with the likes of MG Hector Plus and the upcoming Hyundai Alcazar. Reports suggest that Mahindra sold 603 units of XUV500 in the Indian market in March 2021, while the automaker retailed only 9 units of the SUV in the same month last year.

Front Side Fascia Of Mahindra Xuv500
The Mahindra XUV500 has recorded a massive 6600% year-on-year growth in March 2021.

This comes up as a growth of 6600 per cent on a year-on-year basis. Because of the transition of BS4 vehicles to BS6, Mahindra offered massive discounts on its SUVs, thereby clearing a major part of its BS4 vehicle inventory in January and February itself. This could be one of the reasons why Mahindra sold such less units of the XUV500 in March 2020. Moreover, due to the imposition of the nationwide lockdown in March 2020, many potential buyers were left waiting for the updated BS6 model to arrive.

As for the XUV500 nameplate, it could make a return as a five-seater sibling of the XUV700 at a later point of time.

Here's a rendering of the upcoming Mahindra XUV700 based on spy shots seen before.

The upcoming XUV700 will be built on the company’s all-new global W601 platform, and the carmaker claims that it will come loaded with a lot of first-in-segment features and technologies. It will be built at the company’s production facility in Chakan, Maharashtra and it will slot in below the carmaker’s flagship SUV - the Alturas G4. Mahindra have also confirmed that it will be offered with both petrol and diesel engines along with manual and automatic gearbox options. Hardcore SUV lovers will be very pleased with the fact that the XUV700 will even come with an all-wheel drive system.

Although Mahindra has not revealed much details about the engine options, we suspect it will be powered by the brand new 2.0L turbo-petrol engine and the 2.2L mHawk diesel engine that the company recently debuted with the all-new Thar. Mahindra XUV500 To Be Discontinued Post XUV700 Launch, Only Temporarily https://indianautosblog.com/mahindra-xuv500-to-be-discontinued-soon-p323139 Mon, 12 Apr 2021 09:15:41 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=323139 Earlier last week, Mahindra announced that the replacement of the XUV500 will be known as the XUV700 in India. The announcement was made very strategically on the same day when Hyundai unveiled the Alcazar 7-seater SUV, alerting potential customers that there is another model in the same segment to be launched soon. Internally codenamed the W601, this upcoming three-row mid-size SUV was touted to be the next-generation Mahindra XUV500. However, the new 'XUV700' name confirms that the upcoming model will be positioned above the current XUV500. That brings us to the question - what happens to the 'XUV500' nameplate post the XUV700's debut?

2018 Mahindra XUV500 front three quarters
The current-gen Mahindra XUV500 will soon be replaced by the all-new Mahindra XUV700.

Well, Mahindra recently announced on Twitter that the XUV500 nameplate will be 'temporarily' discontinued post the launch of the XUV700. The current-gen XUV500 has been on the market for 10 years and is now beginning to show its age in the face of fresh competition from the likes of Tata Harrier and Hyundai Creta. That said, the word 'temporarily' suggests that the XUV500 nameplate could perhaps make a return as a two-row derivate of the XUV700. It will then perfectly slot in as a compact SUV between the smaller XUV300 and the larger XUV700.

With the new nameplate, Mahindra seems to be following the latest trend in the SUV segment of three-row derivatives of C-segment SUVs, only reversed. Unlike other seven-seater SUVs which are a derivative of their smaller five-seater siblings, the new XUV500 will be a smaller derivative of its larger sibling. It could thus be based on the same W601 modular monocoque platform, albeit in a smaller size. Like the Harrier-based Safari and the Creta-based Alcazar, the new XUV500 could draw styling inspiration from the larger XUV700 and still have its own unique identity.

This is a rendering of the upcoming Mahindra XUV700 based on spy shots seen so far.

As for the Mahindra XUV700, it will mark a huge departure from the current-gen XUV500. It will be considerably larger - both in terms of length and width - than the current-gen XUV500. Mahindra have also confirmed that it will be offered with both petrol and diesel engines along with manual and automatic gearbox options. Hardcore SUV lovers will be very pleased with the fact that the XUV700 will even come with an all-wheel drive system. As for the XUV500, it could be offered with the same engine options, albeit in a lesser state of tune. The all-wheel drive system is also likely to be omitted to keep costs in check.

The new XUV500 could also be sharing a lot of the interior design and features with the XUV700, including the Mercedes-like twin screens for the instrument console and infotainment system and the Level-1 ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) tech. The next-gen XUV500 is likely to debut a year after the XUV700’s introduction in Q2 of FY2022. It could be priced from around INR 12 lakh (ex-showroom) and is expected to come back much stronger to take on the fiercely competitive compact-SUV segment.

Although Mahindra has not revealed much details about the engine options, we suspect it will be powered by the brand new 2.0L turbo-petrol engine and the 2.2L mHawk diesel engine that the company recently debuted with the all-new Thar. It could however come in a higher state of tune than what is available with the Thar. Slated to be launched around October this year, it will be manufactured at its Chakan facility in Pune, Maharashtra. This certainly has to be one of the most exciting launches coming up this year.

Mahindra XUV700 - What We Know So Far

We have seen numerous spy images of the XUV500-replacement on test in India before. Based on the spy images, we can confirm that the XUV700 will come with Mahindra's drop down LED DRL lighting theme as we have seen with the Mahindra XUV300. The one on the XUV700 will, however, be C-shaped and it looks quite quirky. The radiator grille has also grown larger than before and features Mahindra's typical seven-slatted design. Although the face has a resemblance to the current XUV500, it looks significantly more stylish.

In profile, the XUV700 will continue with the cheetah-inspired kink in the shoulder line post the C-Pillar, just like the XUV500. The upcoming SUV will also feature flush-fitting door handles, a first in the segment. There will be generous body cladding all around the SUV. It will come with a completely redesigned rear with new tail lamps and bumpers.

Next Gen Mahindra Xuv500 Spied Interior
The interior of the XUV700 is one of its biggest talking points with lots of technology, features and premium quality materials.

One of the biggest talking points about the upcoming XUV700 has to be its interior and its Mercedes-like twin screens for the instrument console and infotainment system. The system is housed within a single slab of glass with a binnacle-of sort on the top and it sits neatly on the dashboard. The quality of the interior of the XUV700 is also expected to be a huge step up from the current-gen XUV500. The upcoming SUV is also set to bring in segment-first Level 1 autonomous driving technology, which brings in features like autonomous emergency braking, parallel park assist, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and more.

Hinting at the features and technology on offer, R Velusamy, chief of global product development, M&M Ltd, said,

“The XUV portfolio has always stood for creating disruptions and setting new benchmarks with models such as the XUV500 and the XUV300. The XUV700 is built on an all-new global SUV platform, W601, with expert partners across the world and will boast of first-in-segment technologies and features.”

With Ford-Mahindra JV Called Off, What's The Fate Of Ford C-SUV? https://indianautosblog.com/ford-c-suv-speculative-plans-p323044 Thu, 01 Apr 2021 05:15:27 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=323044 Earlier this year, Ford and Mahindra called off a joint venture the two companies had entered into back in October 2019. This was brought about by a change in global economic and business conditions caused by the pandemic. However, in spite of the JV being called off, the two companies had decided to collaborate on products that were already in an advanced stage of development. Case in point - the next-gen Mahindra XUV500 and the Ford's version of the same.

Front Look Of Upcoming Ford Suv 795c
Ford is now on its own for the platform and engine for upcoming C-SUV after the Ford-Mahindra partnership was called off.

Now, earlier last week, both Ford and Mahindra decided to call it quits on the on the engine and platform sharing supply pacts as well. This essentially means that all projects shared between both manufacturers have been scrapped. And the vehicle most affected by this decision is the next-gen XUV500-based Ford C-SUV. While Mahindra will continue their own development for the second-gen XUV500, the upcoming Ford C-SUV is now left without an engine and a platform. According to the partnership, Mahindra was to share the next-gen XUV500 underpinnings for the upcoming C-SUV, while Ford would have taken care of the exterior and interior packaging.

Ford is now pretty much on its own to handle both, the vehicle and its engine requirements. There are reports that the Ford C-SUV will be built on the Ford Territory platform that's sold in the Chinese market. As for its engine options, the upcoming SUV was originally supposed to be powered by Mahindra's 2.0L turbo-petrol and 2.2L diesel engine options. In fact, the same will be offered with the next-gen Mahindra XUV500. Going ahead, Ford will have to look for powertrain options from its own family.

Next Gen Mahindra Xuv500 Spied Front Quarter
Meanwhile, Mahindra will continue their own development for the second-gen XUV500.

The change in platform will of course have an impact on the launch timeline of the vehicle, which could now be delayed by at least six months. Moreover, it will also have a significant impact on costs for both companies, and it remains to be seen how each company meets this challenge. Originally, the Ford C-SUV would have been manufactured at Mahindra's plant in Chakan, Pune. However, Ford will now have to look at options of manufacturing the vehicle at either its Chennai or Sanand plants. Localization and huge export volumes could help Ford to some extent in this regard.

There are other products that have also been affected by this partnership being called off. The Ford EcoSport was slated to receive Mahindar's  1.2-litre TGDi turbo-petrol engine later this year. Of course, this plan has now been scrapped. The EcoSport, which is due a comprehensive facelift, will continue with its 1.5L petrol and diesel engines. The American carmaker was also working on a Mahindra Marazzo-based MPV, but that too has been scrapped.

Both SUVs are slated for a launch in India in the coming months. Latest reports suggest that the new-gen Scorpio will arrive in the market before the new-gen XUV500. Until now, the reverse was being speculated. The next-gen Mahindra Scorpio is expected to launch in June 2021, followed by the next-gen XUV500 in September 2021. Here's what in store for both Mahindra models.

Next-Gen Mahindra Scorpio - What To Expect

Like the Tata Safari, the Mahindra Scorpio has been a posterboy of butch affordable SUVs of India. Spy pictures of the next-gen SUV suggests that it will be much larger than the current model and is set to receive a comprehensive visual update. The next-gen Scorpio retains its tall-boy stance with upright pillars. It will continue with Mahindra's signature vertically slatted grille and the headlamps have a twin-pod design.  The upcoming Scorpio will actually be underpinned by the same ladder-frame chassis that underpins the all-new Thar. The interior of the next-gen Mahindra Scorpio will be completely redesigned for a more premium and upmarket feel.

One of the biggest changes will be in terms of mechanicals. The new Scorpio will come with both petrol and diesel engines. The new Scorpio is expected to come in June followed by the XUV500 in September 2021.

The second-gen XUV500 is going to be one of the most exciting new launches of the year. It's a huge departure from the current-gen model with completely new exterior and interior styling. Perhaps the biggest talking about the new XUV500 will be its expansive features list. Not only does the new XUV500 feature a Mercedes-like dual digital screen setup, it is also expected to come with Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Much like the new MG Hector Plus and the Tata Safari, the next-gen XUV500 will also likely be offered in both 6-seater and 7-seater configurations.

Built on a stiffer monocoque platform, the new XUV500 will have two engine options under its hood - 2.0L turbo-petrol engine and the 2.2L mHawk diesel engine that the company debuted with the new Thar - with both manual and automatic gearbox options. It could, however, come in a higher state of tune than what is available with the Thar. Mahindra could even throw an all-wheel-drive system in the mix, at least for the higher variants. The new Mahindra XUV500 is expected to be priced from about INR 14 lakh (ex-showroom). That will put it against the likes of the Tata Safari, MG Hector Plus and the upcoming Hyundai Alcazar.

Although we have already seen several spy pictures of the interior before, new spy shots have emerged on the internet that gives us a completely uncamouflaged look of the interior of the 2021 MahindraXUV500 for the first time. And first impressions are very positive with an ultra-premium look and feel.

2021 Mahindra Xuv500 Spied Front Quarter
New spy shots of the 2021 Mahindra XUV500 have revealed some very interesting details.

The biggest talking point obviously has to be the Mercedes-like twin screens for the instrument console and infotainment system. The system is housed within a single slab of glass with a binnacle-of sort on the top and it sits neatly on the dashboard. Going by the spy shots, the touchscreen infotainment system seems like it could be operated via a swivel wheel on the center console as well. Conversely, the swivel wheel could also be a drive-mode selector.

The quality of the interiors of 2021 Mahindra XUV500 also seem to be a huge step up from the current-gen car. The SUV will have a dual-tone black and beige dashboard theme with plenty of silver accents that give the interior a very premium feel. The dashboard has a nice layered effect because of the different trim elements and the switchgear on the center console, HVAC controls and elsewhere also appear to be of quite a premium quality. Much like the new MG Hector Plus and the Tata Safari, the next-gen XUV500 will also likely be offered in either a 6-seater configuration with captain seats or a 7-seater with bench seats for the middle row.

The next-gen XUV500 is also set to bring in segment-first Level 1 autonomous driving technology features. Once only reserved for luxury cars in India, the XUV500 will soon be the most affordable car in the country to boast of such a feature. Level 1 autonomous tech will bring in features like autonomous emergency braking, parallel park assist, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and more. Top 5 Upcoming SUVs You Need to Look Out in 2021 - Kushaq, Jimny & More https://indianautosblog.com/top-5-upcoming-suvs-in-india-in-2021-p322591 Tue, 23 Feb 2021 13:20:37 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=322591 As the demand for high-hauling vehicles soars in India, the action in the SUV segment is getting interesting with each launch. If you notice the trend in the past year or so, SUVs have taken a high seat among launches that took place in India. In fact, such is the charm of SUVs that new carmakers entering India are also relying heavily on their success by launching an SUV as their first product. Hence if you are among the buyers who are looking to buy a new SUV this year, these are the monikers that you should wait to check out.

Skoda Kushaq

The Skoda Kushaq will be a very important product for the Czech carmaker in India. It will be first product that will be based on VW Group's localized MQB-A0-IN platform, with which the company is aiming for up to 95% localization. The company will, however, not be cutting corners and it has been made to look and feel like a genuine Skoda car. Styling along with well-appointed interiors are going to be one of the biggest highlights of the Skoda Kushaq.

Meant to rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos, the Kushaq will be powered by VW Groups' 1.0L and 1.5L TSI engines. Like most other VW and Skoda cars, we expect good performance and handling from the Kushaq, something that could give it an edge over its rivals. Going against the likes of the Seltos and Creta is certainly not an easy task, but the carmaker is confident that the Kushaq has all that it needs to be a successful product. Skoda will be taking the wraps off the Kushaq on March 18, 2021.

Mahindra Scorpio

2021 Mahindra Scorpio Front 3 Quarters Rendering F
Here's a rendering by our in-house digital artist of how the next-gen Scorpio could look like in production-spec.

The Scorpio comes from the house that is known around the world for its expertise in high-hauling body types. Like Safari, the Mahindra Scorpio has been a posterboy of butch affordable SUVs of India. Spy pictures of the next-gen SUV suggests that it will feature a 5-slot grille, new headlamps with LED DRLs, a longer bonnet and revised bumper with wide air intakes. The new-generation model will have a longer wheelbase, with extended C-pillar. The rear section might be revised with LED taillights and a larger tailgate with easy ingress and egress.

One of the biggest changes will be in terms of mechanicals. The new Scorpio will come with both petrol and diesel engines. The petrol model will use an all-new 2.0-litre mStallion turbocharged motor, while the diesel version will get an updated, more powerful 2.2-litre mHawk unit. The petrol engine will be rated at 150 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. The power and torque figures of the updated oil burner could be higher than the existing unit that makes 130 bhp and 320 Nm. The model lineup will come with a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic torque converter gearbox options.

Citroen C5 Aircross

2021 will again see the debut of a new manufacturer in India after Kia and MG Motors debuted in 2019. Citroen will mark its India entry with the C5 Aircross, which will come to the country as a CKD. It will surely be expensive on account of being a CKD (about INR 25-30 lakh, ex-showroom),but it has a very unique interior and exterior styling in its favor to try and grab the attention of the Indian audience. The Citroen C5 Aircross will also be very generously kitted out but will have a sole powertrain option - a 174hp 2.0L diesel engine mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

In terms of features, the C5 Aircross comes with a panoramic sunroof, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a kick-to-open powered tailgate. Citroen has also equipped it with dual-zone climate control and a 6-speaker sound system. In terms of safety, the SUV gets an electronic stability program and a blind-spot monitoring system. In India, it will rival the 2021 VW Tiguan, Skoda Kodiaq, and the 2021 Jeep Compass.

Maruti Suzuki Jimny

Yet another highly anticipated vehicle for the Indian market is the Maruti Suzuki Jimny. Speculations and rumors about the Jimny coming to India have been doing rounds for a long time, but it was only very recently when Maruti Suzuki confirmed that the Jimny is being evaluated for India. Although Maruti already manufacturers the Jimny here in India for export purposes, Maruti Suzuki has always been non-committal about launching it in the domestic market.

When launched, the Jimny will be introduced in India as a five-door model. It is even speculated that the Jimny could revive the 'Gypsy' nameplate in India. It will be a proper off-roader, underpinned by a ladder frame chassis and employing four-wheel drive with a low-range transfer case.  It will be powered by the same 105hp 1.5L K15B petrol engine that you find in a lot of other Maruti Suzuki cars like the Vitara Brezza and the Ciaz. The Mahindra Thar will finally see a rival in the Jimny in India.

Mahindra XUV500

Last on our list is once again a Mahindra, but a more premium product this time. Mahindra will be debuting a brand new generation of the XUV500 this year and it has been completely redesigned from grounds up, just as the new-gen Thar. It will be loaded with tons of fancy new tech, some highlights including a Mercedes-like twin instrument console and even Level 1 autonomous driver assistance features.

Under the hood, the next-gen Mahindra XUV500 will be powered by the new crop of petrol and diesel engines that Mahindra debuted with the Thar, possibly in a higher state of tune. This means there will be a 2.0-litre petrol and diesel units with an option of either a manual or automatic gearbox. That said, the global shortage of semi-conductors could delay the debut of the next-gen Mahindra XUV500 as well as the upcoming new Scorpio.

Next-Gen Mahindra XUV500 and Scorpio Launch Likely To Be Delayed - Here's Why https://indianautosblog.com/next-gen-mahindra-xuv500-and-scorpio-launch-timeline-p322628 Thu, 18 Feb 2021 07:35:25 +0000 https://indianautosblog.com/?p=322628 Spy shots of the next-generation Mahindra XUV500 and Scorpio have been doing rounds on the internet for quite some time. Both SUVs are slated for a launch in India in the coming months. However, as it now appears, their launch could be delayed due to a global shortage of semiconductor chips. Yes, its the same reason that's causing the unusually high waiting periods on the Mahindra Thars as well.

The next-gen Mahindra XUV500 would have been one of the most exciting new launches of this year but it could now be delayed.

Semiconductor chips are a very integral part of a car's electronics and the ECU. Without these chips, modern infotainment systems, driver aid's and other critical electronic components wouldn't work at all.  These vital components can't be manufactured and fitted to the cars without the chips. Global shortage of semiconductor chips have completely disrupted the automotive industry’s supply chain and is also impacting manufacturing around the globe.

It's not just the auto industry that has a high demand for the semiconductor chips. The auto industry is also having to compete with other consumer electronic devices, such as gaming consoles, laptops, desktops and tablets, that also require these semiconductor chips. This has, in fact, made the shortage even more pronounced. Mahindra - like many other automakers - have also been a victim of this global shortage. This is why there's a high possibility that the launch of the second-gen XUV500 and the all-new Scorpio could be delayed.

A global shortage of semiconductor chips will likely delay the launch of the all-new Scorpio as well.

The second-gen XUV500 would have been one of the most exciting new launches of the year. Built on a stiffer monocoque platform, the new XUV500 will have two engine options under its hood - a 180hp, 2.2-litre turbo-diesel and a 190hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol - with both manual and automatic gearbox options.

As for the all-new Scorpio, it too will be updated with a completely new exterior and interior styling. The new model will retain the upright and boxy silhouette but it will be larger and wider than the outgoing model. The interiors are also expected to be a lot more premium. The Scorpio will continue to be underpinned by an updated ladder-frame chassis and will have two engine options under its hood - a 140hp, 2.2-litre turbo-diesel and a new 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. It now remains to be seen when both the SUVs actually make it to the market.

Indians have a special affinity towards SUVs largely due to road conditions and also practicality. With cars like MG Hector, Hyundai Creta and Kia Sonet, the sub-20 Lakh market is abuzz with new launched every now and then. We have compiled a list of top 5 key offerings in the SUV segment under INR 20 Lakh that you can opt for buying -

Hyundai Creta

The mid-SUV from Korean carmaker happens to be the best-selling SUV in the country, even outpacing cars cheaper than the Creta. In its second generation now, the Creta has been a popular choice among SUV buyers ever since it was first introduced 5 years back and remains a top seller despite increase in competition.

Hyundai offers the new Creta with a 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine, available with a 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). The other powertrain options includes a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine that can be availed with either a 6-speed manual transmission, or an automatic transmission. The Hyundai Creta's prices start at INR 9.99 lakh* in the Indian market. It goes up against the likes of the Kia Seltos, Tata HarrierandMG Hector.

Kia Sonet

After its success story with the Seltos, Kia has stirred up a storm in the Indian sub-compact SUV segment with the introduction of the Sonet. The car borrows a good deal of features from the Seltos mid-SUV and packs it in a comprehensive package that is hard to overlook. In the hotly contested segment, the Kia Sonet locks horns with a few of the popular badges in the country like the  Maruti Suzuki Vitara BrezzaHyundai Venue, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300. Prices for the base variant with the petrol powertrain start at INR 6.71 lakh*, which goes up to INR 12.99 lakh* for the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol GTX+ version with the 7-speed DCT.

Sonet gets the segment's largest 10.25-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system, built-in eSIM for UVO car connectivity features, push-button start with keyless entry, automatic climate control, wireless charger, electric sunroof, rear AC vents, six airbags and much more. It gets multiple engine and gearbox options including a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit, two 1.5-litre diesel units with different state of tunes and a 1.2-litre petrol unit. Tata Safari

Tata Motors has reintroduced the Safari brand in India renaming the Gravitas SUV, which was an extended version of the Harrier and now gets a third row of seating. The Safari carries the same Harrier looks with considerable change in the roofline, increased height and enlarged rear overhang. In terms of length, the Safari is longer and taller than the Harrier by 63 mm and 80 mm, respectively.

While the new Safari's dashboard design is similar to the Harrier, it gets Oyster White upholstery that adds airiness to the cabin. It has an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, 8.8-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system, keyless entry, panoramic sunroof and push-button start. It also has an electronic handbrake. While the Safari shares the same wheelbase as the Harrier at 2,741mm, initially it is being offered only as two-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive and electric versions are in the offing in future. When it comes to the engine, the Safari will be powered by the same 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine like Harrier. This engine can produce 170 bhp of power and 350 Nm of torque.

MG Hector

The MG Hector was introduced as India’s first Internet Car and recently got an update along side an additional 7-seater model under the Hector Plus moniker. It does not carry a lot of changes over its 5-seater sibling on the outside. The car comes with the same split headlight setup that sits on either side of the cascading grille. MG has slightly tweaked the bumper on both sides. Hector is the brand’s first offering in India and is priced reasonably, considering the amount of features it offers.

There are three seating options – a 5-seater, a 6-seater with captain seats and a 7-seater with bench type seat in the middle row. MG, however, calls the third row seating of the 6 and 7 seater variants apt only for kids and not adults, especially for longer travel periods. The Hector comes with automatic tailgate, panoramic sunroof, a Chit-Chat i-SMART Next Gen interface, 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment and tyre pressure monitoring system. There’s a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 2.0-litre diesel engine and only a manual gearbox. The petrol engine also gets a mild hybrid variant.

Mahindra last updated the XUV500 in 2018 and the SUV has started to feel dated in the world of Safaris and Hectors. However, it still holds a charm among good looking proper 7-seater SUV car segment below INR 20 Lakh*. The car is available in seven variants: W5, W7, W7 AT, W9, W9 AT, W11, and W11(O) AT. It is now offered with a BS6-compliant 2.2-litre diesel engine that continues to put out 155PS and 360Nm.
